Hi all,
I have a 1989 F350 crewcab 351EFI/C6/4.10. This is my daily driver and tow rig. My mechanic broke some of the intake-to-head bolts off while trying to correct an intake gasket problem. He says they are corroded. We've decide to to pull the heads to remove the bolts and do a valve job. The engine has 110k and he says looks immaculate on the inside.
Questions:
1. What can I do to the heads cheaply for a little more power? 3 angle valve job?
2. It has the AIR system that has connections to the exhaust manifolds. Since the heads are off, I would like to change this to the setup that has the AIR connecting to the back of the head(s). Can this be done? What do I need to do this?
Thanks in advance for the info!
FYI, this was also posted in the 302-351 performance forum
complaints about Ford heads is their inability to breathe. When I built my 351W (74 casting) I used a die grinder and got rid on the thermactor bumps on the exhaust side of the head. Grind them down flush being careful not to remove too much material or you'll have a problem. Rather than get into specifics I'll say there are lots of articles on how to clean up a set of heads for better airflow.
You're not gonna see any real benefit from a 3-angle valve grind unless you do a whole bunch of mods. And you said cheap, so going crazy would defeat the purpose. You could always mill the heads for more compression (cheap), but then you get geometry problems ($$). I'd focus more on durability and oil control as far as the heads go.
