my reverse in my three speed tranny is grinding where it wont go in unless u slam it and i dont wont it to screw up anymore than ive done so whats wrong
I'm no expert by any means- so someone may need to correct me.
My friend had a '97 Jeep Wrangler and it made a grinding noise when he put it in 3rd and he had to slam it in like you have mentioned. His mechanic said his synchronizer was going out.
Maybe that's what is happening to you?
Again- probably not the cause of your no reverse issue, but I thought i'd throw my $.02 in.
The Ford 3.03 transmission (the "three on the tree") only has synchronized forward gears.
Reverse always grinds a bit when engaging, especially if you're rolling forward slightly.
You can coax it a bit though. With the truck idling, put in in 1st.
Let the clutch out a bit, just enough so the truck wants to inch forward.
Push the clutch back in and it should slide into reverse as slick as snot.
This all has to do with the types of gears in a manual trans. Reverse is the only
one where you're engaging an actual "gear". Forward gears are engaged with
what are called dog teeth, and with them being synchronized, they slide right together.
By "bumping" the clutch in 1st as I mentioned, you're basically making the input and output
shafts in the trans play nicely together so that the reverse "gear" can slide into place.
Give it a try,
Murph.
PS- Don't start messing around with clutch adjustment.
PPS- No such thing as "reverse bands" in your trans.
PPPS- Welcome to the FTE forums!
peganit2- reverse grinds in both my 76 and my 91 unless you are at a COMPLETE stop. the older the trans, the more likely it is to grind, i find. as far as clutch adjustment, tdawglp should see if murph 77's trick works first, before throwing adjustments at things.

Yeah thats why I always come to a complete stop before trying to shift into reverse, put the clutch in and let the transmission stop spinning. I don't grind reverse gear, never have.
The OP seems to be saying that it's beyond procedure and it's getting worse.
i adjusted it alittle and it still grinds but not as bad and when i was messin with it it did go in better when i would just put it into first gear what year 3 speed could i buy that doesnt grind

The 3 speed you have was the same from the '60s until Ford stopped using it in the mid '80s.
Reverse was never synchronized. The clutch linkage has nothing to do with it grinding
or not grinding when engaging reverse.
. The clutch linkage has nothing to do with it grinding or not grinding when engaging reverse.
Murph.
You can NOT say that as a truism. If the cluch is dragging for some reason, you will allways have a difficult time engaging reverse and it will grind. Completely disengage the clutch and it will NOT grind if you follow proper procedure.
I'm fairly certain that the OP has a clutch or a clutch linkage problem. Adjusting the linkage was the first step in diagnosing what the problem is.
The tidbit about transmissions only recently getting syncros on reverse falls in the general auto information, not specifically to our trucks. Sorry about the confusion. It's on some front wheel drive cars and some high end exotic cars. No truck that I lnow of has it. Although they're probably the first ones that should have.
