Intercooler, which one

Well looking on E Bay I see several used 6.0 and 7.3 intercoolers.
Several have tubes included or available seperately for a total cost of around 500 dollars plus or minus.

Next are new 6.0 and 7.3 intercoolers from Radiators US at a cost of around 500 dollars, no tubes.

Then there is a complete Banks Technicooler with tubes and the fancy Banks intake spyder for just under 1500.

Last there is a Spearco 2-478 intercooler, again no pipes for just over 1500 dollars.

Right now I am leaning toward the Banks kit since it has everything including the intake spyder.
I laugh every time I look at the stock spyder on my 97 which I don't see how I could reuse.

Would I be leaning the wrong way with the Banks kit?
The Banks install looks like it would be about 8 hours worth.

Is there a better option?

Am I missing somethig I am not seeing?

The banks is nice because it comes with everything.

You definately can't use your stock spyder. You would need to find one from a early '99 superduty and they are pretty hard to get a hold of.

As far as the intercoolers, if you don't get the banks kit I would go with either of those that came with the pipes. The 6.0 coolers are supposed to flow better though. But either will work well in your truck. But again, with those you would need to find a spyder.

If you arn't in a hurry the early 99 intake spyders show up on Ebay once in a while. The number cast in it is1827060-C1. I got mine for $85 off there. I also got the tubes off Ebay from a guy that makes them for $185. The connector hoses I got from Intake hoses dot com For about $100. And the intercooler came from a recycler, it was the all aluminum one, and that cost was $100. So for less than $500 I put my system together.

if you want top notch go for spearco, but is overkill IMHO and fits tighter than the others. The banks is good but expensive. Go for one the others as Brownie said, Im sure you can get one for about $400. with pipes, that you also have to mod.
You can use your OEM spyder, modding it, look the pic.

And I just got done collecting a few links to do this project. Here's some that can help you:

Hey man, I used an 04 6.0 intercooler and it foots in there like it's ment to be. Use the last link in the above mentioned, the bronco install, I used that and it was a breeze. To the pipes I modded the stock spider, its not easy but if you like welding then it's alot of fill but fun. And I used superduty ic pipes off of an 03 iirc, the driver side pipe does not need to be modded, it's tight but fits. The passenger side you can cut off the end closest to the turbo and weld it to the modded spider and the rest of the pipe lines up perfect to the spider.

You can pm me anytime if you have any questions

I'm with these guys Dave, build your own. 4-500 bucks and you'll have everything, with a little looking. That spearco is sweet, but you could spend that extra grand on something else you want imo.

So I guess my only questions left after reading through those links and looking at the pictures comes down to this.

Looks like a 6.0 intercooler is more efficient than a 7.3 intercooler.
Looks like the Spearco is the most efficient.

Would you put the Banks efficiency below the Spearco but above the 6.0 intercooler?

And another, I just saw an 03 6.0 blow both ends off the intercooler over the 4th.
So is that something I need to be concerned with?
For what it is worth, I think his turbo was gummed up with oil not letting the variable turbo adjust to lower the top boost pressure under high loading, but the end result was an intercooler turned to shrapnel out on a vacation trip pulling an RV.

140 volt IDM
Right now just a fuel pressure BB mod, but electric fuel is in the near future.
Stock injectors, but Stage 1 from Rosewood also in the near future.
Chip from TW or DP Tuner also in the near future.

Just figured an intercooler would be best if it was in place first.

I don't know what the differences as far as cooling would be on the 3 you mentioned. I can't believe it would be much you would even notice, but could be wrong.

I see with the mods you are planning you are setting yours up kinda like mine except I don't have the elec fuel yet. One thing to let you know (maybe you already do) if you do the mods listed you are going to want a bigger hpop too. I didn't do the hpop at first when I did everything else in my sig and I set a cel fairly easy towing. I think mine may have been getting a little weak but when I talked to Jim at rosewood he said that the stock 15 will not keep up with the injectors and chip.

Oh I am sure I will be getting PMS as this project gets going.

Forgot the 4" straight exhaust is already under there.

I will be checking several of the local salvage yard for stock intercoolers to see what I can find and watchng E Bay.

There is a CL listing for a town 40 miles north of me, so I will watch them as well.

WV just is not a great place to find stuff like that.

Just turned over 91,000 miles on mine, so the engine is almost broke in real good.

Medidas:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
