My ABS light came on the other day. I also heard the ABS unit pulsing without touching the brakes. I checked the codes and the scanner comes up with nothing. I do have a caliper that is sticking that I am replacing this weekend. I am not sure if that could be the cause? I also had my bed loose on the truck to install a gooseneck hitch last weekend. Maybe I hit a wire? What else should I check?
Not really that will read ABS codes. Auto Enginuity reads them, its about $340 and very useful. You might try going to your state's section here and seeing if someone local to you would be willing to scan it. Other than that, dealership and $80-100 to scan. You could also check with a few brake shops, some have scanners that rear ABS codes and will charge you like $25.
Does the speedometer bounce? If so, it's the rear sensor getting dirty or going bad.
Also, you might want to actually pull the front ABS sensors, check if they are covered in metal, and that they are actually fully seated into the unitized wheel bearing.
Otherwise, it might be worth getting the ABS codes read and reporting back here to figure out what to do next.
One small bolt and you can pull the sensor out and look at it. Usually they get errors when your bearing is going and they get too much metal dust/pieces stuck to them.
According to the service manual, their should be 650-800 ohms resistance across the speed sensor wires.
It might help if you got the actual code. It appears there are two. One for circuit failure, one for signal erratic/missing.
I checked the wire for resistance last night and didn't get anything. I cam going to double check since it is hard to get to the male pins in the plug.
