Rear Diff

What would be the normal operating temp of the rear diff after pulling 10K for about 30 miles. I dont have gauges so i just shot an infrared temp gauge at the diff cover.

i saw in another thread where CSPID suggested 195* as the upper temp for the rear diff.

would shooting the temp off the rear cover be close to what the oil temp is?

I know its just a reference point, but my Kenworth would stay around 130-150.
I would think shooting the cover would be close, maybe a few degrees cooler...I've never done it, so Im guessing.

Towing 2000# for many miles on my F350 resulted in an infra-red diff cover reading of 135F. This is running synthetic 85w-140 - all stock stuff. I realize my trailer doesn't represent much of a load, but it's a data point for you.

What's behind the question....curiosity, having a problem??? I recently put on a MagTech Tranny pan and also had my differential clutches replaced. The nut to the pinion gear had backed off so far that I was having some slop in the driveline and vibration on turns. Mypoint was when I asked if heat was a factor and if I needed the MagTech diff cover to help with heat I was told no, heat was not a problem for the 01 X even though I tow a 12k Toy Hauler. Interested in your question......

just trying to make sure it ok before heading out for RRE. have about 400 (not a great distance) miles one way to get there and dont want to have any problems. I measured the temp after pulling 10K camper about 30 miles at highway speeds and got 180*F on the cover.

trying to get a baseline to compare it to. i bought the truck about 1 year ago and not sure what all was done to it. the diff fluid is the only fluid i have left to change. i have 154K miles on the truck right now.

ok, you probably already know this... when towing heavy of greater concern would be the EGT's, do you have a pyrometer? Ig your going to continue to tow heavy then I highly recommend one, along with a tranny temp gauge. If you have a tuner package then you deginately need the pyrometer. What's your setup...and is it all stock?
