Rear Diff Temps

Is it really necessary to monitor rear diff temps?

For the average person I suspect not.. But even towing reasonable amounts of weight?

I think if you run a good synthetic oil you should be ok, I installed a aluminum differential cover to help dissipate the heat

Even in big rigs rear diff temp gauges are optional , aslong as you keep it serviced with proper lube at the service intervals you should be fine.

I would love to be able to look at all the different oil temps, ie: rear diff, T/case, 2 spd, but just don't want to go to all the hassle of gauges, mounts, etc. If I had unlimited funds and time I would also install an oil cooler on each gearbox. buts that's for a different life, AFTER I win the Lotto! what I do when towing is when we stop for a pee break, to take an IR temp gun and shoot the diff just to see if its gone way up.
That being said, I recently switched rear diff fluid over to Red Line Heavy duty Shockproof 75-250.
I did this because of the recommendation by Kwick. it flows like 75-140, but has the shear capabilities of 250 wt. looks like peptobismo. the diff temps have dropped about 20 degrees.
Of course your case may vary. i have 4:88 gears and the diff holds 14 qts, yeah, that's not a typo, 14 qts. so my oil maybe working harder than most.

I do the same, & usually see 108*-125*
I also IR gun all the wheel bearings, truck and trailer at fuel stops but thats another thread.
With my mileage heading up towards 300k I would like to add a diff temp gauge to maybe catch a bearing failure before it causes more damage.
I wouldn't worry about it on a low mileage truck.

Years ago, there was a company, in Riverside CA I think, that sold a gadget with multiple senders that you epoxied to whatever you wanted to monitor temps on. Had an analog gage with a rotary switch that selected which sender/component you wanted to check temps on.

I bought a 4 unit set and monitored tranny (manual), diff, trans case, and oil pan. While they were probably not super accurate, they would, if you payed attention, indicated an impending problem when things got above what was normally seen.

Have never seen anything like this since. Can't believe a modern day version of this has'nt been marketed.

Barney, You can install 1 gauge and a switch to change to different sender for the trans and the diff. and transfer case. It would save on cost and dash clutter. Thanks for the heads up on the Red Line Hd gear oil.

Yeah, I could set up my X-Monitor to switch between different senders but I guess it hasn't gone from a "want to a need" yet. Too many brewerys to sample as we travel !

Like Bob mentioned. Just buy an extra sensor and get a switch (SPDT) to add an extra sensor to the gauge. I did this with my trans temp gauge. I wanted to see temps post cooler to see how it was doing. With the Autometer Gauges it is pretty straight forward. any of the temp gauges can be used for this. If you so desire, you can add a rotory switch with multiple contacts and you could watch multiple temps.
