Long bed to short bed conversion

Is the frame the same on a 1966 long bed and short bed the same? Can I take a long bed truck and put a short bed on it without any problems? Thanks.

No issues. Other than the two feet between the front of the bed and back of the cab and a wicked long rear bumper mount.

In other words, correct. Swapping chassis would be so much easier.

But a long bed frame is easily modified to fit the short bed, bed.

If the wheel base is the same. Is it? And the only difference is the length of the frame past the rear axle. One could cut the excess frame off. It seems to be difficult to get a straight answer.

Wood, what everyone here is trying to tell you is that part of the length is between the rear wheels, and the cab, and part of the length is behind the rear axle. Therefore you would need to cut a section of the frame out between the cab and the rear axle, and then you would have to cut off the rear section. It is a ton of work for something that could be solved by buying a junk truck, 64-79 i believe, and transferring the parts.

Maybe we can work on getting a straight question.

If the wheel base is the same. What wheelbase - same as what?

Is it? ??????

From the top: Is the frame the same on a 1966 long bed and short bed the same? No lwb & swb are different lengths.

What are you wanting to do? We will try to help.

Anything can be done with enough time and money thrown at it.

Ill chime in here because I thought about doing this exact same thing to my longbox.

1st off, having someone do this to your current frame can have mixed results depending on quality of the work. Ideally, they would reinforce the cut part of the frame with some iron inside. I have seen this done on another truck my father did, very strong if done correctly.

2nd, if its not done correctly, (as in the right length when complete) I would imagine the rear axle would not line up with the box correctly, which would look goofy as hell, and also a custom driveline would be needed.

3rd, not a cheap endeavor, considering you need to shorten fuel lines, brake lines, parking brake cable, driveline from your frame on top of the cost of having the frame shortend.

As someone said already, with enough money, anything is possible. But if you just want a shortbox slick, might be easier and cheaper to find a donor shortbox. Either way, GL.

Thank you. That is what I was trying to find out. That is a very good answer. Every one was talking in riddles. I am not good at riddles. I was looking at a long bed truck on ebay. That was why I asked the question. Thank you.

4wd short beds had a shorter w.b in 66 but as long as the chassis or donor bed isn't 4wd you shouldnt have a problem. I think 66 4x4 shorts were 3+ inches shorter than the others.
