you suppose those "hard to find rims" are widowmakers? or are they actually something people might want

I would want it just to make a parts truck out of. You could be a small work shop in it.

My dad bought a truck like that when I was in high school. Someone had made a camper out of it and it was blast for a couple of post high school kids to pack up and head up north. It was slow as hell on the upgrade but it was a place to sleep out in the woods.

The wheels don't look like Widow Maker, I don't see the inner band.

That truck looks like it has some stories behind it,..it's also got some character.

The grille looks like a 55 and the vents under the grille are kinda cool (and may be needed),..the flip-down hood may be all thats needed to check the radiator fluid level from the front, since it seems acces to the engine compt is from in the cab.The more I look at it...the more I see the Big Brown Truck (UPS).I Like it.

Look at this one offered locally; no good pictures, but think what a great camper or parts-scrounging van it would be!

If somebody gave it to you you'd be a flaming fool to turn it down. If for no other reason, its wheels are absolutely golden to guys with one ton trucks. Those are the extra rare 6 lug x 7.25" bolt pattern tubeless variety that, from the look, appear to be 17.5s rather than 19.5s. And he says he has extras that go with the truck. Too bad he's asking a king's ransom for the truck. Stu

Get you one of those and start you a "Pickers" TV show.

I think the widow makes were gone by 1960, I don't see an split rings in the photo, but can't tell for certain.

I drove a similar truck back in my carpenter days. It was an old bread truck.

Under recall pressure from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the manufacturers agreed to stop selling Firestone RH-5° widowmakers in 1972. Kelsey Hayes was, however, still selling replacement side rings for them by my records in 1976, and according to the IIHS in 1977. The recall effort died under manufacturers' lobbying pressure in 1980. Stu

I believe those wheels are the 22.5 tubeless drop center, that first came out in 56....in the 60's-80's UPS ran this rim with 9x22.5 tires on most of its package cars.
I would love to save that step van but his price per # is too rich for me.

Don't think so. They aren't big enough to be 22.5s, there's too much inward angle on the center to be a 22.5, and a 22.5 would have to be a 6 lug x 8.75" bolt circle instead of the 7.25" circle. Plus the spares show the coined in/out lug holes that I think settles it. At most they are 19.5s, but to my mind even that is a stretch.

truckdog,
I stand corrected. I saw the 6 lug and assumed it was the 8.75 bolt circle. Thanks i learned something new today.

Sure thing. Like you said, though. Too bad the guy thinks it's worth three times its value. Stu
