...the more I see the Big Brown Truck (UPS).I Like it.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't a UPS van. UPS had a lot of their van custom made. My dad bought van of about the same vintage from a UPS auction in the early '70s and it didn't look anything like that. From looking at the painted over logo on the side I'd bet it was Merita Bread van:
I could have had a van like that for free about five years ago, but it was a 1952. Instead, I pulled the 6 cylinder engine, grille, instrument panel, vacuum wipers and the hood. Left the rest there to be crushed.
P Series Parcel Delivery 1951/75. Many were used by bakery's, so are known as bread trucks.
Also used by UPS until Ford introduced the Econoline Cut-Away and rolling chassis.
The P Series rolling chassis (P350/400 & P500) was used by Motor Home manufacturers, many were made by Condor.
The P Series was offered as a P100, P350, P400 and P500. The P100 was cancelled at the end of the 1967 model run.
The bodies were supplied by outside body makers. Ford either sold the rolling chassis only, or as an Chassis & Cowl or Cowl & Windshield (Open Drive-Away's) which included the dash, and drivers seat.
There was a Chevy version known as the Step Van.
It was a fiasco!
In 1967, the fleet manager at the dealer I was working at, took 100 of these in trade from Frito-Lay. He had them re-painted white, converted them to campers, then offered a one year warranty.
Not ONE iota of mechanical work was done to them, not even so much as a tune up or oil change was performed.
Most broke down repeatedly, cost the dealer a bundle to fix the piles, not to mention the towing fees.
The fleet manager was fired, but not before we changed his name from Al Pratt to Al P. Ratt!
