My 98 F150 4.6 with 45,000 miles is pinging it started when I pulled my 82 F-150 4X4 on a trailer; I have only pulled it 3 times for about 30 min each. I thought I would just run high octane fuel to fix the problem but it's started pinging without the trailer any time I accelerate to fast once I'm moving, like taking it to 2700 rpm in 2nd gear. I read the post "spark advance problem" by mdbell sounds allot like mine but my truck doesn’t stumble and still has plenty of power. Could this be a censor or a timing problem?
Thanks for any help.
get it to person that can put it on a scanner or engine lab scope !both preferably .
There are lots of sensors that contribute to how your engine runs!
the pcm takes all this info and adjust things accordingly.
Even though the truck may have the 100,000 mile tune up triton, it doesn't mean it will last 100,000 miles between them all the time. That's light duty highway driving, under optimal conditions, at best. Go ahead and pull the plugs and check them to see if you have carbon build up or other contaminants shorting the electrode, enough to cause premature ignition....
Then there's that deal where you're pulling that truck with a truck that's over it's towing capacity... I know, I know... just giving you crap
Yea the 4X4 is a little heavy for the 98 1/2 ton. According to the owner’s manual it's rated for 7000# towing which is about 1500# less than the truck and trailer, Ford must have got that rating driving down hill. I have a friend that is a mechanic for a ford dealer, I'll run it buy the shop next week after I check the plugs.
Thanks.
if you are so inclined, it is fairly easy to clean the mass air flow sensor, the IAC, shoot some thottle body cleaner in the throttle body, clean out the EGR, put on fresh oil/air filters. Did that work to my 140,000 mile 4.6 F150 couple of weeks ago and all pinging noises went away, including no pings at wide open throttle. i only use 87 octane fuel. i change oil/fuel filters regularly and in my case the biggest improvement came from cleaning the EGR. Dont know if this makes a differnce, but i only buy name brand gasoline (no convenience store gas ) and occasionally use techron in the gas tank. i replaced the plugs and wires (used motorcraft wires) at 100k.
There are many things that cause "ping". The 4.6l Triton is no stranger to this problem. Assuming you have no CEL or any diagnostic codes stored.(if you do post them) I would :
1) Use up that high octane gas,. Than fill up with 87 octane.
2) Re-boot your PCM. (disconnect NEG battery terminal, turn on headlights, wait 20 minutes, turn off lights, reconnect NEG battery terminal)
3) Drive at least 4 cycles so the PCM can relearn your habits. Each "driving cycle' to include start up,drive stop and go, plus open road(50 mph or more)up to temp, shut down and cool off.
If you still have the "ping problem" after this, do a full "tune-up".(plugs, wires,PCV and fuel filter)
If you're still having the problem at that point re-post and we'll take it from there.
Good Luck
(let us know how it goes),
Bill

agree with wmcnally in regard to step nos 1. thru 3. suggest you clean the sensors listed in my memo before the tuneup recommendation. steps i suggested are very inexpensive to accomplish (assuming you have some tools, mild mechanical appitude , reasonably informed/physically able, know safety procedures, etc ) . worked for me. good luck.
Thanks guys I'll give that a shot. There are no codes in the pcm, everything checked out ok.
I did take some reoccurring advice from everyone hear at FTE, I bought a 97 F-250 HD with 108,000 miles on a 5.8 and a
5 speed, it belonged to a friend of mine who drives long distances to work and needed something with better MPG, got it for the pay off of $2,800.00 very clean tuck.
Hey, i noticed that you have the 7700 lb. payload package on your '00 F150. I ordered the same thing on my '02 truck. I was told that it included the following: heavy duty frame, larger brakes and shocks, 7 lug-nut chrome covered steel wheels (that rust) and a 3.73 posi rearend.
Did your truck come with the 7 lug wheel pattern and are your rims rusty around the edges?
-hooD
As much as the rest of the undercarriage has rusted (exhaust is rotting off, punkin has lost most of the powder coating), the rims are holding up to the elements. I haven't noticed any rust poking through the chrome.
Well I used a half can of throttle body cleaner and erased the pcm memory and the ping is gone. I haven't pulled anything with it yet but I have a light load of lumber to pick up soon, then I'll find out how it does under a load.
Thanks for all your help.
