I have a 99 F250 SD 5.4 with a 144,000 miles. The service engine soon light came on and I had autozone scan it for me. The code was p401 so I ordered an EGR. The autozone guy told me that with that code my mileage would drop way off. I drove back home about 285 miles with the old EGR still in place and my mileage was about 17.9 mpg. This is my normal highway gas mileage and the truck runs fine. With 144,000 miles I figured that it probably will not hurt to replace the EGR but now I wonder if that is the real problem. Does anyone have any advice?
Look at the post just down from this one about
"egr insufficient flow"
You could have any one of the problems stated in that post they will all cause a P0401 code.
I guess chk the egr ports first ,for carbon build up!
about two years ago i took in my 97 fi50 to a local mechanic to see why the check engine light came on. early indications showed it was a bad egr valve stuck in the open position. well, he replaced it and the light continued to flash. he troubleshooted it for several hours and later told me there was a large amount of carbon buildup in the throttle body. he took it off cleaned it and that corrected the problem. since then ive had no problems.
