Yeah pretty sure you would have to, I really don't see a way in pulling out the engine with the clip still on.

just makes it easier. i kinda had to, my truck is too tall for the cherry picker to lift out of the engine compartment. but as long as you remove either the clutch/fan setup or your radiator (or both for good measure) then you can just remove the hood

Pulling the front clip or just the core support makes it a lot easier ... You don't _have_ to pull either, but if you don't pull the core support you have to lift that heavy motor over it.
