Anyone know the best way to use a factory '78 fuel tank with fuel injection? What I have now in the truck is a Mustang 5.0 HO with a Mustang tank under the bed with the filler neck sticking out of the center of the bed. I want the filler neck to be where it's supposed to be with the correct tank. It is a '78 with a long box with two filler doors.
probly going to have to go the external route, unless you can modify the tank enough to somehow get new car stuff to fit where old truck stuff goes. nothing wrong with external pumps, simple to plumb, easy to service if need be.
Does the mustang set up use two fuel pumps or one?
for my 1988 EFI conversion I am Just using the tank out of an 88 f-150. Same size and I patched in the 88's fuel door into my 74 where It previously had no door. (trying to cure the slow fill problems my 74 had)
My set up is two fuel pumps, low pressure inside tank, high pressure on frame rail.
Initially I will be using a 88 sending unit pump assy that i welded my 74 sender on. Then when I get the dakota digital dash. I will swap over to the 88 sending unit style. (the resistance values between sending unit eras are different for gas gauge)
But to use the stock tank you just braze a return line onto your stock sending unit and add a nipple to the inside to keep the return fuel from foaming up in the tank. This set up use an external low and high pressure pump.
Couple years after my 1988 version, they switched to one high pressure pump in tank. I'd think they would fit also but can't be sure haven't measured them.
I used a 1992 truck tank with my fuel injection setup. It has an internal fuel pump. I had to go with an aftermarket gauge sending unit as the one from the 92 wouldn't talk to my fuel gauge.

What sending unit did you use? Were you able to use the factory gas gauge in the dash?
So, I'm guessing I can use a '92 tank without an external pump. My gauge now reads full all the time until I get to about an 1/8th to a 1/4 tank then begins to head to empty very quickly. Maybe the '92 tank with some sort of resistor?
I would use a mid 90s F150 tank and pump. My 96 has one 125lph in tank pump. Mustangs are only 90lph so its more than enough. The rear tank shouldnt be hard to fit in the stock spot either. Not sure what to do about the sender though.
