Towing, EGTs, and engine derating

I've had my truck into 2 dealerships and been on several test drives with my trailer now, and have been unable to get a definite answer on this. My truck is a 2008 F-450, 51k miles, bone stock, 4.88 rear end. My trailer weighs in at around 15k. I have a recurring problem that has been duplicated for the tech several times now, but no root cause has been found. When towing up a long grade, I will lose power. Not a lot, but enough to notice, and see on the boost gauge (drops from around 35 psi to around 20). We have determined that EGRT A sensor is reading more than its 1300 deg set point and starts to derate the power. The sensor has been replaced, leading me to believe the temp. is accurate. However, there doesn't seem to be any reason for it to be this high. They were questioning my fuel quality, which has been more or less the same place and a name brand. I am going to switch to see if it helps, and start running a cetane booster. Has anyone else had their engine derate the power like this on a regular basis? Any solution?

Fuel quality does come to mind. Switch stations. Ensure you are running ULSD from a high volume place.

When was the last fuel filter change? Don't think that has anything to do with it, but thought I'd ask

Watch the exhaust upon initial startup to see if there is a "hint" of white smoke. If so, Turbo(s) are going. If it is the turbos, expect the truck to be out of service for almost a week.
Same truck as you, started to see white smoke, just a little upon startup and found out a seal went causing oil to go through then burn-off. My HP/Fuel Mileage went to crap also not knowing what it was. The dreaded "Pull Over" message popped up one day and off to the shop it went to get the Turbos replaced under the Powertrain Warranty.

Hope its not that but I tow 18,000lbs on a daily basis and sounded similar to what you are seeing.

I wanted to make sure I eliminated that too, so I just changed them.

I will check, but my mileage hasn't really changed, and it pulls some hills great. Did you notice your oil level dropping? So far mine seems to be making a little oil like most everyone else is reporting. Thanks for the input guys. I'm guessing both of your trucks will pull a long grade at full boost (~35psi) consistently?

I think you should get some gauges so you can see actual temps while you are driving. I am rolling a little heavy right now and when I go up a grade, engine downshifts, RPM's jump to 3000-3300, and my EGT's jump to anywhere from 1200-1350, sometimes tripping 1400. My turbo psi really never tops 30, maybe 32.

Your theory may be right that the motor might be protecting itself but it's hard to tell without knowing what is going on under the hood.
