Engine "derates" on long hard pulls

My truck has "derated" a few times recently on some of our long hard pulls. (8 mile long steep grades 12,000 lbs trailer). I can ussually pull the hills at 55 mph all the way to the top. I loose power and the little "wrench" light comes on. If I pull over and shut the truck off, I can restart and accelerate to 55 and finish the hill. Took it to the Ford Dealer (Seekins) and there are no codes.

????? any guesses?

Any gauges to tell if the temps are getting too high. The computer monitors quite a bit of stuff and anything getting in the danger zone for the engine and transmission can make it detune..

No tuner so the computer is telling you temps are getting close high temps. My neighbor came over one day and said his wrench light came on and I asked him what he was doing ,pulling about 35000 pounds of round bales will 100= hp tune I told him he got lucky he didnt melt the turbo or pistons.

EOT/ECT more than 15* apart. Could be a sign of a failin oil cooler/egr cooler. I believe the newer 6.0 monitors and defuels if variance gets to high.

High EOT will de-fuel all 6.0s.IIRC it is 258* the truck starts to de-fuel.The fan clutch going out will get you the same troubles.

you say you have a egr delete. some say on your year the fan gets screwed up with a egr delete with out custom tunes. did you hear the fan come on. do you have temp read outs? not the ones from ford. that's along pull with a good size load. did it ever do this before the egr delete? I thinks that might be it. But what do I know I'm just a dumb plumber!

My truck did this once while pulling my 7k trailer. Started up a small hill and half way up the tranny downshifted and next thing I know my speed is decreasing and wrench light comes on. When it happened I quickly looked at my boost gauge and it was around 30. Turned out to be a overboost situation.

You may be right on the money ..Could be egr needs to be plugged back in even if it is just a dummy egr laying on the engine. As fan may not be activating until it is too hot.

Has your fan ever come on to your knowledge - especially on your "hard pulls"? As mentioned previously, this would be a good place to start the investigating. It also could be water pump and/or thermostat related.

Since it is a recent change in performance, it sounds like you might also be generating more heat than you used to (in addition to not effectively removing the heat).

Are you losing any coolant?
Do you have a tuner? studs?
When was your last flash update?

I was under the impression that if the wrench light came on a code was set.

Perhaps your dealer doesn't have the latest software on their computers to properly read newer codes? You might want to check with the dealer, or with a different one.

Knowing the code could go a long ways towards knowing the problem.

IMHO a new oil cooler is in your near future. The latest flash sets that wrench when the coolant and oil temps get too much spread. As was stated above the truck should have a code the dealer missed for some reason.
