Anyone know where to find a factory cold air box that mounts to the radiator support?I see that LMC carries the tubing that hooks up to the box and attaches to the air cleaner but I can't find the box itself .Thanks for the help-Ken
to clarify, it takes up engine bay room, gets in the way of trouble shooting, and the air goes through it like a Z which I'm sure is bad for air velocity. I can't imagine it would have any gains over running a normal air cleaner!
He probably wants it for the same reason I put mine back on my carbed 1985...COLD AIR! By using the flexible hose that attaches to the radiator support and then to the snorkle on the stock air cleaner, much colder air will be drawn in from outside of the vehicle, rather than the very hot, under-hood air you would get from an aftermarket open-element air cleaner. Everyone knows that hot air is what hurts performance and economy! Another benefit is that as your speed increases, more air is being "forced" into that intake tube for your engine to use, producing a slight "ram air" effect as well.
There is a very good reason why every car manufacturer at that time was using a thermostatic air cleaner and the "cold air" systems.
the tube is so convoluted I can guarantee you that the reduction in efficiency would negate any benefit that drawing slightly cooler air in would have. You woudl be far ahead to buy a K&N air filter and some mandrel bent aluminum and craft your own!
I don't think our trucks are typically used at high enough speeds for ram air to ever be a factor. True ram air requires a dedicated inlet and some serious frontal space to accumulate the requisite pressure, and even then is only effective at high speeds.
Beyond this, its not like the underhood compartments on dentsides are particularly well sealed.
what I meant to say is yes, they really do increase performance. I noticed at least 15 hp gain when I have mine on. Having said that, I find horsepower awfully dangerous, and I'm removing the cold air duct while I install my .75" exhaust to limit all that dangerous power.
I would, however, very much like to share this power adder with someone else for the right price.
Thanks guy's.The reason I was looking for one is I was thinking of going to a aftermarket air cleaner (open air chrome one) and I'm running headders and thats a lot of heat under the hood.Maybe I was thinking with a stock cold air hooked up from the front I would be getting cooler air into the carb.or would just useing the open air cleaner work just as good? Thanks again for your help on this-Ken
I checked the one I have out tonight. I THINK there is another one in my parts truck, not sure. but the one off my flatbed is actually cracked on one side. nothing some duct tape wouldn't cover. but definitely cracked. If you want it I will part with it for a few dollars.
It will not be compatible with most aftermarket filter setups as most aftermarket stuff is open in 360 degrees and not just to the pass side like the factory EGR setup is.
Hey 7Ford6 could you post some pics of that underhood setup? I went to the website and it looks pretty good. I'm currently running the Z shaped factory cold air setup. Just detaching the hose from it makes the intake sound better.
