There's no kit for a true cold air intake for our trucks. Typical aftermarket intake places the filter in the same location as OEM, but in the open.

Does it matter what filter is used

nope, a lot of us use a 6637 setup which is essentialy a large cylindrical tractor filter. It's cheap and easy. I pull the whole intake out often, quick and easy.

This is what I got

My truck came with an AFE intake that has a box/shield around the filter in a feeble attempt to isolate it from engine heat and pull 'cold' air from the front; but it's still behind the battery. The AFE kits are in the $300-400 range, not worth it in my opinion. I'm glad I wasn't the one who spent the money on it. Just get a 6637 kit and be done!

Agreed. Mine came with the same kit. It seems a little pointless but hey, it's there so I'll use it.

I bought the AFE to isolate the turbo whistle from getting into the interior of the cab. I do not feel its a feeble attempt to keep heat from the filter, it works. It still wasn't enough to keep the noise out so I put a cummins turbo whistle silencer on the intake and that took care of most of the whistle. Trying to keep the little woman happy, LOL
