I recently purchased a 1997 7.3 4X4 powerstroke that was converted from auto to manual.
After getting the steering column rebuilt the speedometer stopped working (dont know if it is related) but I also found out that the original wiring harness is still in place and is just tapped to accommodate the switch to manual.
I am also having an issue with a flickering alternator light and a delayed kick in of the alternator (when truck is started battery shows 8v then after about 30sec od driving clicks to 13v)
I was also told by seller that it has original auto ecu.
Dont know what I need to do? Replace wiring harness with manual specific harness? Change ECU?
Where would I get the parts, any instructions on the fix? Any recommendation for labor in the northeast?
Thanks in advance, Mark
The fueling is a bit different for the manual trans vs. the auto. A cheaper option than a new PCM would be to get a chip that's burned for a manual trans. That will override the auto programming and you can get one with 6 good custom tunes for under $400 from PHP, TW, Gearhead, or DP Tuner.
Do a seach in the forum for manual transmission swap, a member here did one a couple months ago and he knows what wiring needed to be changed and stuff...
I'd go to a junkyard and find a manual trans PCM rather than doing it though the chip myself. The main difference in fueling between the 2 PCMs is the bottom end. The manual trans will fuel when it sees load from a stop(example-letting off the clutch), the auto PCM won't do that.
not really. just got the IDI out today. i did the n cab wiring the other day, so that is one less thing to do. i wanna try and get the powerstroke in tomorrow, then the rest will be just wiring
everything else on the truck should be the same. Only other thing I'd be worried about is the transmission wiring, but if that's not the same then it should swap over easily. the under hood wiring is actually kinda nice isn't it? it all comes out in one big chunk of wires and lays back in pretty nicely. Keep us updated on this thing
the tranny wiring is seperate from the rest of the harness and comes out seperatly.

It's a sickness, i swear.
there is no difference in the engine mounts whatsoever
i got the engine and tranny in last night all in one shot, not fun. most of the wiring is done, just some little add ons for the back doors and third brake light ( cause we all know if the third brakelight dont work, the engine will leak oil). i hope to be driving by the end of the weekend if this stupid rain holds out.
my helper...
future powerstroke with the tool boxes on...
George having gone from the 3.55 to 4.10 i could not go back i still drive 70 on the interstate and i don't see a change in MPG. You thinking about swaping gears
