I am still running with a stock 223 6 cyl in my 55 F100. The previous owner was including lead additive after each fill-up. Is this stuff really necessary for I would really like not having to add anything to the fuel. Thanks.

Howdy,
Not really. It's more snake oil than required additive.
It's not even lead. You cannot buy "real" tetra-ethyl lead.....it's been banned since the 70's....
I ran my 1957 Ford 292 from about 1970 on using an unleaded gas and it didn't burn the valves or do anything else to it.
By the time it does anything "bad" you'll be wanting to rebuild the engine or do a valve job anyway. The machine shop can put hard valve seats in it then.
If it really bothers you, drop on over to the local (small) airport and get some avgas. Mix it in with your gas once in a while in any proportion that makes you feel better!
Years ago I would add it with every fill up. But I too have read several opinions and theories that say it is not needed unless you are pulling heavy loads daily or are racing. I have not added lead for about14 years and have had no problems.
