If the truck has been updated for corn gas, just hit the filler tube cleanly with regular unleaded and enjoy the ride. Ethanol free is better - not just for your old ride - but not always available. Lead additives do not contain lead. Many are fans of Marvel's Mystery Oil for both the crankcase and gas tank.
I'm guessing my 226 doesn't have hardened exhaust valve seats either so I need a lead substitute as well. Anyone have a favorite that is not too hard to obtain?
Unless you're planning heavy towing at highway speeds in your truck a lot of people say there is no need for hardened valve seats. An engine of that era may be OK in fact, they used good steel back in the day.
A straight six kept at reasonable RPM and lighter duty should be fine. Testing found the lead subs don't do much, are expensive, and need to be double dosed or more to work at all.

"Lead substitutes" are just oil, they do nothing good. Your 226 should have stellite seats on both valves. Ford began phasing them out in '51, when they went to rotators (on the V8's at least).

I saw this fuel additive featured on some automotive program on TV and thought I would give it a try...I have been running it in all my vehicles ever since (~12 mos). It really works great on counteracting the adverse effects that methanol has on the fuel system. Many others who I have spoken to about this additive have also run it with good results. https://www.amazon.com/Star-Tron-Enz...words=startron
While on this subject, did anyone else read the article regarding the use of diesel oil in the older engines? It seemed like a good argument for it's use. Is/has anyone using/used it?

I heard the same thing about diesel oil and found it interesting that the owner of Fantom Works out of Virginia (the show is on Velocity) finished rebuilding a 50's vehicle (I'll be darned if I can remember what kind) but the owner asked what type of oil to used in his newly rebuilt engine and Dan told him to use a 15W40 diesel oil and to ignore the "diesel" designation. I plan on my next oil change to use it myself.

I've been running 15w40 diesel oil in my 48 (flathead v8) for a couple years now. So far, so good.

I use Chevron Delo 400 15w-40 in the dozer, skid steer, excavator, the '08 Powerstroke, and the 254 cu. in. gasoline engine in the mixer.

I have been running non-ethanol 87, no additives, for two weeks now. Truck has never started as good as now plus it seems I have lost a slight hesitation off idle. Big bonus seems to be no soot on first start.
