Relocating oil filter

Is there a kit or even a different oil cooler assembly to get some more room around a 7.3IDI? My steering box is occupying the space the oil filter needs in current form.

Check out a bypass filtration system. my dad has the amsoil bypass system on two of his PSDs, it has an adapter that screws on the stock filter head, then you just route hoses to where ever you want your new filter head.

yep, ive got one. i think the adapter is like $100 and you can even buy the hoses with fittings and a filter head from napa or baldwin. or you can buy the whole thing from them.

[edit] arrg, I need to start reading titles ... I thought you wanted to relocate the cooler [/edit]

He doesn't want to add one, he wants to get rid of the original one to gain room on the side of the block.

I'm sure it could be done, I would also say that it's not going to be easy, I suspect one would have to make the plates themselves to adapt the factory location on the block to AN fittings ... Then one could do whatever one wanted, The oil filter would also have to be relocated considering it's mounted on the cooler.

ya, its a tube and cuppler that threads onto your block in place of your filter. then you hook up the lines and run them to your new relocated filter housing.

instead of the dual filter housing, you can get a cheap cast piece from autozone or napa and a spin on filter. the one i have is set up for a 2 micron filter and 10 micron filter. so, its a bit more then your looking for, and not as cost effective unless you are looking to do extended oil changes.

Is this because of raising the truck or something? I have a PSD oil filter on my 7.3IDI, which is longer than the original filter, and I don't have any clearance issues whatsoever...

Chris.

he does want to relocate the cooler because of lack of filter room. if he relocates the filter then he can leave the cooler where it is.

raising the truck doesnt require anything to be moved, just spaces between the frame and axles. and your running the 94.5-97 filters. if you tried to run the 99-04 then it will not fit at all. filter hits everything, but the filter thread and gasket match so if you could clock it somehow it would fit.

I'm putting the engine into a 69 F250 2wd. 65-79 2wd trucks have the steering box inside the frame rail behind the front axle, with all the linkage behind the beams. I think I can set the engine up high enough to clear the linkage, but I won't have room to work on relocating the oil filter once the engine is in. It looks like it'll at least be very close to the steering box, so I'd rather relocate while it's out in the open.
That adapter looks nice, but still does hang quite low. I may have to just make a custom remote adapter, I'm already making one for the Mercedes diesel going into my Courier. Are those 1/2" hoses on that kit?

Relocating the filter would not be to hard.

Relocating the oil cooler/filter would take some custom adapter fabrication because of the coolant and oil flow through the oil cooler.

Custom adapter plates bolted to the block front and rear, then a custom adapter plate for the oil cooler that would hold the cooler together and let all the hoses hook up to the correct passages.

The rear header would be the toughest because of the oil pressure regulator, probably wind up with three hoses to running from the oil cooler adapter to the block adapter on that end.

Depending on exactly where your clearance issue is, another option may be an oil cooler from an E series.

F series oil filter leans to the front from top to bottom.
E series oil filters lean to the rear from top to bottom.

The oil cooler sits in the same place though, so the E series cooler would only help if the filter location is the problem area.
