fh : )_~
Not really,6' 0 215lbs,,bad heart,2 attacks so far, but Ill manage,,If I can get #3 son to quit chasin his girlfriend around he could ****** them out!! #1 son works all the time and I cant get his nose out of all those computers he fixes!
Update...I got the heads off, surpriseinly I reached in there ,got ahold and lifted them right out,,I couldnt tell if the gaskets were blown, but I can see marks where the valves hit the pistons,The little marks all over some of the pistons seem to indicate at one time or another a glow plug tip broke off in there but not since I have had it.Is it safe to use the same pistons?? I also turned the crankshaft, all pistons move up and down,The last time it was running I had a high pitch chirping noise coming from the IP housing area, when I turned it by hand I could hear a small grind or chirp, like metal on metal,Any thoughts??By the way, that bolt I couldnt get to on the exaust manifold, was solved by taking the manifold loose from the pipe and pulling the whole thing.
Well, from my experience, I wouldn't re-use those pistons in a engine that was gonna be put back on the road (school engines would be a different story) As cheap as pistons are, I would give consideration of having it bored .010 over and replacing all. I am assuming you are having the block boiled out, magnafluxed (or other method) and having it milled too.
Keep in mind I am just looking at the pix...your block looks pretty full of burnt oils and asphalt. Something rattled around in a cylinder and dinged up a piston, so, it might have jammed up/bound a piston momentarily in which the rod bearings took the jarring. At the least I would recommend is an in-frame, meaning the block stays in the truck, yank the oil pan and check the rod bearings. You can replace the piston(s) that need it. BUT, from my experience as a certified diesel mechanic, I have never had good luck with that. Many, many over-the-road trucks that have that done as a cheap method of getting the truck back on the road come back on a hook (towtruck) in a few thousand miles.
Of course, you have budget constraints to look at, but, my opinion, just looking at the pix, if you could afford it, the engine needs a boil out and rebuild.
Rick, if you do think you need one or more heads check with clearwater cylinder heads. They are in fla. and are great to work with. That is who I got mine thru last fall. It was about $700 for both heads including shipping. If you would like I can shoot you a pm with thier number.
Rick I know this isn't what you want to hear, but don't rush this and don't do this on the cheap. If you can't afford to repair the engine properly this time around, then seal it back up temporarily with some fogging oil and wait until you can. At the very least take a very hard look at those pistons and check the condition of the bore. If you are really stuck, I could have a look at my old pistons and send you some. But again, don't do this if the bore is really out of whack (out of round, too large, or scored). Minimum oversize pistons for these engines are 20thou.
Thanks guys,Im not in a hurry with it,ive got a little beater truck to put put around in,I want it to be right this time.Ken we have a good diesel machine shop over in Pensacola,They quoted me 200$ to rebuild the ones I have. Thanks for the offer David,i think i may go ahead and pull it on out and just go all the way with new everything. At least it wont be as heavy now!Funding is slow coming in anyway,Im less than 1 year away from the end of my mortgage so it will be much easier in a few months. After looking at those new trucks again and their pricetags I dont mind waiting and putting some $ in this, that way I know its right and will last a long time.
hey, i noticed something... wonering why you did it, and hoping that you did. theres a piece that bolts to the middle of the block that holds the roller rockers in place. i noticed you didnt have that piece in any of the pics.
