Ive been doing some reading on building my 351M and i was wanting soem feedback on what i have. Ive read that pretty much everything from the cleveland and modified is interchangable except for some valve train, depending on what is used.
This is what i have come up with:
1.400 crank, pistons, pushrods, connecting rods
2. Cleveland heads, intake, 4 bbl carb, timing set and cam.
Is there any problems i will occur if i build it with these internals as listed or what would cause me problems like it is?
Do you want to make a 400 out of the 351m?In order to do that you will have to change a few parts. You have listed a few things. What kind of performance do you expect from this engine?
Not looking for a 400. That would be changing rod and pistons. Im looking to do something different than the ordinary, looking for unique, so to speak.
The rods are the same in both the 351m and 400 engines. The 400 uses a different crankshaft and piston. You can use the valve train componenets out of the 351c in both engines with the exception of pushrods. The 400 and 351m have a taller deck height. You can use camshafts ground for 351c,gear trains, water pumps, etc.you can use 351c pistons if you will rework the 400 rods(small end bushing reduction).or bore the 351c pin bores to accept the larger diameter 400 piston pins. You can use Cleveland heads, although the 351m and 400 have them already in the 2v version. You cannot run 351c intakes without spacer plates between the heads and manifolds. When they increased the deck heights,it also increased the span a cross the vee.Still curious about what you really want to build. The 351m and 400 are both low compression engines in stock form. They are really great engines to make something out of,but they also come with a price to do so.
Not sure exactly what i want to build, but looking to do something like i had mentioned, something out of the ordinary. I wanna be differnt with my build:i was wanting to use the 4v cleveland heads
To get the most out of those heads you will need to build an RPM engine. These engines are really about torque and lower RPM with cast parts. As Mark mentioned, talk to Tim Meyer.I'm sure he can help you out with any configuration you have in mind. His website is:TMeyer, Inc.
