I'm wondering if my pickup has a 351 Cleveland or a 351 Modified. All along I have been told its a Cleveland and I have been ordering parts for a Cleveland and they all fit and work properly, but when I took my starter out to put it in my new 75 F150 the casting number on the engine block was D7TEA35 and above that upside down was 9819. I searched around on the internet and i can't find a D- code 351 Cleveland. I can find D-code 351 Modifieds. I've had 6 mechanics tell me its a cleveland by measuring from the water pump to the intake, counting valve cover bolts, the size and many other things. I'm really confused here and I'm not sure what to do all of the Cleveland parts I've been ordering have fit just fine and it operates just fine. Were they all wrong? Any suggestions on this?
The 351c is so closely related to the 351m and the 400, that most outside parts will fit with no problem. The block on the 351m/400 is taller, and the intake is wider than the 351c. But they use the same heads, and the stuff on the front is the same(waterpump and stuff like that). The harmonic balancer will not swap though.
The reason the mechanics were looking at the distributor area is to look for the "step" in the casting around the distributor hole. Even though they made the 351m/400 block taller, which makes the intake wider, they used the same distributor as the 351c(429/460 also I believe). So to use the same distirbutor with the taller block, they had to "sink" the dist mounting hole down in the block. Then the casting "steps up" as you move toward the intake surface. This area is smooth and even on a 351c.
As it was previously said, a D7TE block is a 1977-1982 351M/400 truck block.
The 9819 is the cast date of your block, which was September 19, 1979. This means that your motor is more than likely the correct one for the truck, since production of 1980 F-Series trucks started after July, 1979.
D7TE= 1977 truck engine. Don't go back to those mechanics.
I wunna say they stopped the Cleveland in the early 70's. they stopped the M in either 82 or 83 I think, maybe 84.
Thank you parkerparkerm. The problem is those mechanics are good mechanics, one has worked at the Ford dealership for 39 years and is my uncle. The others have been pretty good mechanics so thats why I thought it was weird that all of them were wrong and they did all the checking of everything.
Thank you too Franklin2. I have a air conditioner in the way so they might not have gotten a good look at everything but on the driver side head there is a big ol M stamped on there which really sealed the deal of disappointment and embarrassment. I thought I would have around 550 horses with all the mods and the engine and all that but no just barely 190 hp if that
Thank you as well Fordzilla80. My pickup came outta the factory and onto the show room January 15th 1980. The people who owned it before me said the people they bought it from changed the engine from a 351M to a 351C and so I was plenty fine with that but I don't think that they did any change to it. probably just rebuilt it...
351C/351M/400: All have 8 valve cover bolts per side. There is no timing cover per se, just a flat engine front cover plate.
The fuel pump bolts to the left (drivers) side of the engine block using a 6 & 12 o'clock bolt pattern, the only V8 fuel pump to have this pattern, as all the others are at 3 and 9 o'clock.

Have you done anything besides what is in your sig?
The 351M/400 can be made to run more powerfully just like any other engine. The biggest deficit for this engine is low compression.
That's true. Most people start with the 400 as the foundation since you get 50 cubes for free, but they can be made to run. They have a longer stroke than the 351c, so they are actually more suited to a truck than a 351c is.

sorry but cleav and mod use diff heads mod had 400 head made it a decompressed 400 that made it a 351plus the mid has a big block bolt pattern for bellhousing of tranny

easiest way measure the bellhousing bolts if 6 inch apart cleav and if 8 then you have mod

The 351c 2bbl used a large chamber head just like the 351m/400. While they might not be exactly the same chamber shape, I doubt most people could tell them apart, and they will interchange and bolt on fine with no fitment problems.
As I stated earlier, the 351m/400 does use a different block, but it's very much related to the 351c.
