actually the advanced timing doesnt ping a bit i have a buddy who has the same exact truck as mine and he advanced the timing on it to 16* after doing the six litre tune up and no ping on 87. I do believe ymenski on this forum has done it also.
Yep! I went w/ a 60K (45ohm) coil, brass C&R, MSD superconductor wires. That allowed me to increase gap from .044 to .056 & also sidegap my copper core plugs. Anything at least 48k, low ohm should allow it.
On bumping the timing, I've found that 16 BTDC is the sweet spot for an otherwise stock rate of compression engine. Any more, little if any gain seen that would justify any furter advance. I run 87 octane unless I'm planning on running through both tanks, none stop at 80 mph (Road trip). Then I'll run 89 octane. 87' 302 w/83k.
It's a package deal to get the full effect. The increase spark kernel exposure & the further timing advance. If your running increased gap & sidegap, an ignition box is of little use & in fact may be detrimental. My HC output is .01 ppm. Average expected output for my truck is .14 ppm.
I am about to change my heads on my 351 so i am going to regap the plugs while they are out they will be gapped .54. I am using D0OE style heads so i will have a slightly higher compression rate so i may have to back off my timing just a bit.

Try going up an octane click. The higher compression rate may warrant it.
I am going to see how it runs on 87 if it starts knockin i will go up to 89 and take my timing down a notch to see how it handles i dont see it causing a problem though

You'll work it out I'm sure, w/ both variables to work w/! Start w/ max spark kernel through gap increase,(w/ or w/o sidegap) & go from there.
Honestly it really doent eat enough power to even care about that. Thats y my smog pump is just an idler on my truck. Plus i am a cheap b****** if i dont have to spend money i am not going to
Just like i wish i didnt have to buy head gaskets tommorrow and swap these heads but the idiots that put my headers in broke 8 out of 16 exhaust manifold bolts so yeah i am a little ticked off i think i will just buy the fel pro kit that has every gasket from the head gaskets up.
i personally think that a hotter ignition just supports a hotter engine, power comes from the curve.
I have heard before that the smog pump only takes 1/3 hp to turn, which is entirely possible. but its still freaking ugle and is just a band-aid anyways. upon deleting the setup for my bronco I had to make some custom plugs just so I wouldn't have the nozzles still up on the head.
yea, i knew about the acetone treatment, this thread and your post about the injector has sparked a fire to take the plung and give it a try......i would love to hear about your real world experiences with this stuff.......im not sure im ready to tackle a hydrocarbon system, but im definitely up for building a water injection set up
lol, i was afraid to bring that up because of the threat of being flamed for throwing some crack pot alternative crap out there.....glad to see im not the only free thinker around here
I am a Nerd / Geek type of person, that thinks out side the BOX and I am to Old to care what people think about my Half brained/Crazy ideas and systems I just know they work, and some ideas i will get them to work or trash the idea Take care, Chellie
There is little or nothing to be gained by bypassing the smog pump. If you still have cats you will definitely want to keep it. Also because it injects air into the exhaust it might help you pass sniffer with no cats.
