so i'm looking to buy a ford ranger perferably the third generation(93'-97) 4x4 and a 5 speed stick and i wanted know what engines size ect.. that would make it fast also any problems people have had. lastly if the second generation is perfered let me know why?
Since you want a 4 x 4, your choices are the 3.0 l. Vulcan or the 4.0 l. engines. If you are doing some hauling or towing , you should go with the 4.0.
Make it fast? you could put a bigger cam in it, that'll speed her right up, MSD ignition is another good idea... Good idea simply to improve fuel economy. you could try putttin a turbo on it.
Not sure off the top of my head. My buddies and I all have Broncos and F250s so we shop for V8's but I'm sure with a little research, you could find things that will fit your price range skill set. I just saw a few people with turbo rangers online, you could just look that up. As for motor parts, try Jegs or Summit racing. They are where we typically shop for our stuff.
by a 98 or later for many reasons. like suspention, cab is bigger and many many more. i pull a ton of crap with my 2000 2.5 4 banger and get 25mpg like all the time. i would not go with a 2.3 they are gutless and if they have a 343 rear gear you cant get them moving. i have heard really good things about the 2.3 dohc. the 3.0 has a bad as super charger kit. and the 4.0 and the 3.0 are worse on gas than any 8cy i have every sceen fatory in the same time period. i would rather own a f150 with a triton than a ranger 4.0 and have the same fuel economy..................thats a fact please hear me out.
I have the 3.0. If I'd known more it would be a 4.0. I barely get 20 mpg highway. I hear the 4.0 gets about the same mpg but its not gutless like the 3.0. I have a friend with a 4.0 with 5 speed. He has SCT tuning, dual exhaust & a intake on it. It runs real good for a 6 banger. I will not buy another Ranger. I'll get a F150 again. About the same mileage with a much better ride, better towing & so much more room inside. The Ranger reminds me of the Pinto wagon my wife had when we met. I call it the pinto pickup. I'll drive it till my grandson gets his drivers license in 18 months. If he keeps his grades up it becomes his truck. I'll get my F250 back then & get the wife another car.
I personally have had no problems with the Ranger. It all just depends on what you want out of a truck. For now, being a college student, the Ranger is the perfect truck for me.

That is a fact duely noted, but the Ranger cost less to maintain than an F-150, everything from tires to brakes, the initial price tag, everything is pretty much less expensive on a Ranger. As far as the gas mileage, yeah, the 4.0L sucks. The 3.0Ls are not that bad. The mileage on them can be improved, but it is head and cam work.
I have to disagree with 'turbochargedford' on the 2.3 being "gutless." Certainly it is not a hot rod, but, with using the gears, it picks up speed fairly quickly. I would not recommend it if you are going to be doing a lot of heavy towing or it you live in the mountains. Let the engine rev, which is likes to do, and use the gears and you can get along just fine. I find that I can easily keep up with traffic during in-town driving.
