Points

I changed the oil in my 73 today and figured while it was inside the garage I would check the point gap.

Well I found out they were pitted pretty good. So I took them out and filed them off good and the pits cleaned up alright. Put them back in and adjusted them and truck runs better.

I put the points in at 52,000 miles and it now has 57,358 miles. What would cause the pitting already, cheap points? Thanks.

5000 miles on a set of points isn't bad. Ford used to recomend tune ups every 4,000 miles(!!!). Excess metal transfer between contact surfaces is an indicator that the condenser isn't the correct capacitance. IIRC metal build up on the ground side meant the condenser capacitance was low, build up on the moveable contact meant the capacitance was high.
Pitting was just a sign of use.
Starting to shake the cobwebs out on that one.

Excess wear on the points could mean the condensor is letting the points arc; it's also a sign they were gapped too closely. To agree with Mike even more, that's not all that bad for points with that much mileage. There's a reason they're ancient.

Thanks guys, I was just thinking that might have been excessive wear b/c I have many old tractors that only God knows how many hours are on a set of points.
