I posted in the proper forum but in classic form no replies, I know some of you can tell me though. My rearend guy told me that my axles were slightly pitted and he didnt want to put them in on new bearings... Now i didnt look that close but they didnt appear pitted to me they just looked like they had a wear pattern on them. My question is, is there a measurement i can take to check clearence or is it just a judgment call on these? I dont see it being a problem unless there are deep pits, I would just lightly sand them and install if it where an aircraft.
If they are as you stated, and not deeply pitted, I would say run 'em. There's no sense in buying new ones. However, after you lightly scuff them up with some emry cloth or such, just be sure you do have somewhat of a press between the axle and bearing, thus letting the bearing do it's intended purpose.
I wouldnt think it would hurt anything, but I don't think I've ever seen a pitted axle?? ( sometimes failing eyes are a blessing)and if I did it wouldn't stop me from using it
I know what ptted races and stuff look like its kinda part of my job, But im putting alot of money into this about $1020.00 and i dont wanna have to pay 200 more dollars on axles. I didnt see anything to resemble (Pitts) either but i dont wanna screw up a fresh axle.
are we talking about a 9" rear end or did I miss something? I've never replaced an axle uunless it was twisted, bent or broken in half..sounds like BS to me..just my $.02..how about some history..why are you doing the rear end?

EM, a little more on what your doing ....and the rear end ..and where is the actual pitting at?? Under a bearing surface that carry's a load?
Its an 8.8 and its getting the FULL rebuild. All races, bearings, seals and a true track locker with 4.10 gears. I didnt notice anything that was WAY out of the ordinary but he said they were slightly pitted ...thats it and that he didnt want to put them in on a new bearing set. I though BS this guy just wants to get another 300 out of me. I dont know where the pitting is i guess ill find out in the morning, but i assume its at the end of the housing where the wheel bolts on. Because the other end is in the carrier.
EM, I say just go with what you feel, you have a background dealing with metal... And like mentioned above..I have never changed an axle unless it was twisted, snapped, or ground the teeth off the spline, or had a bad flange on it!!
And those 8.8 are pretty Damn tough rear ends...I have one in my Stang...and a buddy runs one in his 9 sec Stang (street/strip) 750hp 557" on the motor and a 250hp shot of giggle gas....with nothing more done to it other than Moser 29 spline S/S axle's and a locker....
I was going to go to a 9" in the Stang..But I have found So many guys running the 8.8 with such good luck..I'am going to stay with mine and just put some Moser Street/Strip axle's in it and some C clip elimators..and GO!! LOL..
egoman, I hope you are doing some big money racing with that rear, that is a lot of mula to spend on a 8.8 rear end. There is a train load of complete setups out there for a couple hundred. IMHO
Yea those 8.8's are pretty strong, so i guess ill be running the originals. Im going to the shop right now to find out.

I dont race but i like to play rough(Blew a front rancho5000 through the shock tower jumpin at 60 last summer) and I take it to the desert alot and needed the locker and the gears. Not only for wheelin but for pullin and for bringing my rpms back into the power band with the 33" tires. So where are the complete setups for a couple of houndred?

*edit* i got pictures of the spots on the axles but i cant figure out how to post them up in the gallery.
