I have been using a Fram brand from Wally for years with no problems. It is not specifically diesel rated. I carry a spare as it is cheaper than a pump. I also have downstream filtering in the stock variety as that is cheaper than new injectors if the pump should poop out. The stock filter will flow a bunch.
Are you using the G2 with 5/16 ends, the G3 with 3/8 ends or another one?
You want the 3/8ths...... I ran the Fram see-through for quite some time as well, but switched to the screen type above from Napa. I just use a pair of small vice-grips to pinch the line on either side of the filter when I change it out.

I did the same. I was just worried about damaging the line. I got my shut off valve ordered. I asked the lady at Grainger today if they sell to the public and she said sometimes. After a little persuasion the the shut-off valve is in transit.
Grainger don't sell to the public? I order all the time. Online. Get it the next day, or 2. You can set up an account with your charge card. You can just click what you want and check out. Get it in a day or two. Can't tell you how many times i actually went to the counter to get stuff.. Wierd yours don't normally sell to the public.

Idk....the lady I asked if they sell to the public said sometimes. I guess they curtail to business. I had the part numbers so she took my order.
At least on my 2001, the tank fitting is 3/8", but the stainless line up to the pump is 5/16". At the pump end, a piece of 5/16" hose is glued onto the tube, and there is a 5/16" quick-disconnect on the pump end. There is a piece of thermoplastic hose with a abrasion/firesleeve cover from the tank to the 5/16" tube that has crimped terminals on each end. At the tank, it is a 3/8" quick-disconnect, and the other end is swedged onto the tube.
I think Ford made the tank outlet bigger than the return line for two reasons. First, to keep the assembly line workers from hooking up the hoses backwards, and Second, to make the pickup tube in the tank more rigid than if it was 5/16". Since all the parts past the tank quick-disconnect are 5/16", there is not reason for the tube to be larger for fuel flow.
