No Gears for E4OD

Checked a few pages of searching and didn't see anyone with the same issues and all similar pointed to something we already checked.
A friend of mine has a 91 F150 5.0 E4OD. He drove to work the other day and when he got in it to come back it would not go into any gears. Just park and neutral. It will not attempt to go into any gears at all so we know the clutches are not an issue.
We put a new MLPS on it today and still have the same problem. Next step we are going to try is the actual Harness.

Any insight on other things to try?

Running codes just says it's not in Park.

Thanks in advance.

Mechanical or fluid problem. There are no electronic problems that will result in NO DRIVE.
With no electrical hookups to the transmission at all you will be able to backup and drive forward in 2nd or 4th. Is the linkage working properly?

the linkage is working properly and the fluid is fine. and if there is not enough current going to the mlps or the electronics inside the transmission it will not know how much pressure to put to what gear its supposed to be in. it doesnt even attempt to go into any gear.

So THAT'S how it works!

I thought (from my years engineering these things) that the drive and reverse engagement happened when the linkage moved the manual valve to complete the hydraulic circuit from line pressure to either the reverse or forward clutch, depending on where the driver moved the shifter. As long as the engine was running there was enough pressure to engage the appropriate clutch no matter what the electronics were doing. Even if every electrical connection to the transmission were unplugged there is enough hydraulic pressure to make the engagement.

If the electronics are feeding bad information, it is possible that when you move the shifter to D you could get second gear instead of first gear. There is no possible way that ANYTHING electronic can prevent a drive or reverse engagement. But you already knew that because rclarke told you that a few posts above.

Something mechanical has broken. It could be a shaft, the pump, or a major internal fluid leak.

My friend posted that one based on what we've been reading online of similar issues. Since no one ever posts a follow up in forums it's often hard to know what the actual problem was.

Since you should still be able to get a few gears with electronic failure I guess we'll be dropping the trans soon.

The only transmissions we have laying around are AOD's So we may have to swap one of those in. That or go get his cousins C6 and have a new driveshaft made.

Thanks again for the replies.

If you decide to put an AOD in or even a C6 then, from what I`ve read, you should leave the MLPS from the E4OD plugged in and in neutral to keep the computer happy.
