My '89 I6 (approx 103K miles) has a 5 speed manual transmission and Borg Warner transfer case tthat have some leaks. The leaks are not bad and are more of an annoyance than anything else. Is this common or did I get a Monday vehicle?!
The BW cases LOVE to leak at the case halves, VERY common IME once they get high mileage. IME the factory was trying to conserve silicone, they hardly used any. There's no gasket or seal between the case halves, just silicone... but if you're gonna open it up I'd rebuild it personally. 'bout $250-300 in parts provided you dont' need a new planetary assy.
You can probably get a decent used one for half that much. I sold an '88 1356 recently for $150, but I'll want $300 for the '96 electronic 1356 I still have.
I'm assuming the M5OD mazda tranny was the only 5spd for that year, if i'm wrong i apologize. On top of the tranny behind the shifter are three plugs that have a habit of leaking out of spite if ignored for a long period of time. Gotta get the new plugs from Ford as far as i know, but try replacing them. Spooge silicone all over the new ones also. Took me about 30 min to do, but then again, i have no carpet so the access panel was a snap. I'v you've got carpet the seats will probably have to come out.

USED being the key word.... many yards also sell cases with unknown mileage. I'll spend the extra dough to know everything is new, thanks. If you get a high-mileage case you have no idea how much that oil pump locator has started to eat into the case... you could be only miles from a spun oil pump.
