Transmission leaking into transfer case?
Transmission leaking into transfer case?
Hey guys, I might have a problem. I was under my truck today just doing an inspection, since I hadn't looked at everything in a while. I noticed the external seal on the transfer case(going towards the drive shaft) was wet with fluid. Looked like it hadnt leaked a lot, but certainly signs of leakage. I thought maybe that seal was bad. Well, I did a little research on transfer case leaks but ended up finding a couple of threads about a seal between the transmission and the transfer case that could leak. So I checked my transmission fluid and it was in the add. Ended up taking about 1/2 a quart to put it up in the safe range. So I crawled under and took out the fill plug on the transfer case and fluid came running out. Not sure how much, Probably about half a quart. So if it was just leaking out of the transfer case the case shouldn't be overfull, makes me think maybe I have a problem with this seal between the tranny and the case. Anyone out there had this issue?? If so, how much was it to resolve. Any thought appreciated. Thanks guys.
Well, I had the truck at the dealer today and what I thought was true. The external(rear) seal on the transfer case was bad and so was the internal seal(between the case and tranny). The Mechanic replaced both seals and put a new gasket on between the case and transmission. Total cost was $379(319 for labor). I was happy all in all with that price. I would advise others to watch for this. If your external seal is leaking, check your transmission fluid. If your tranny fluid is low, then check the trasfer case and see if it is overfull, if so, then you probably have to replace the internal seal. Oh yeah, also got the airbag recall done while I was there, I wasn't concerned about it, but since it was there they did it, so now I don't have to worry about that.
Thanks for the info. I changed my t case fluid earlier this year and the same thing happened to me with the fluid gushing from the filler plug. I just thought maybe it was overfilled from the factory. The transmission fluid seems okay but it could be something that's just starting to go bad. My seal from engine to tranny is leaking though for sure because I see noticeable wet grease and dirt near the plastic circle cap near the torque converter. I'll keep a closer eye on the fluid level now though.
