Ignition switch

I've noticed on my 90 XLT that the switch won't turn back to ACC. Does anyone have an idea as to why and how do I fix it? Thanks.

Does it not work in Acc. Or does the key not turn the lock cylinder to get to acc. If it is the lock cylinder it is easy to replace. Look at the column between the lock cylinder and steering wheel. There is a little hole. Find a drill bit that will fit in this hole. Disconnect your battery, turn the lock cylinder to run and push the drill bit in. This will release the lock pin, then you can pull the cylinder out. Install the new cylinder in the run position and you are set. If it is the ignition switch, remove the lower trim pieces, lower the steering wheel. The switch is on top of the column just past the column mounting bolts. There are two screws and one connecter. The new switch will have directions on the proper install procedure for the switch, don't worry it is easy. Good luck.

The cylinder won't turn to ACC. So based on your reply all I need to do is change cylinders and I'm good to go? Is this a common thing with Broncos? Thanks.

Ignition switch

When the cylinders get old they tend to wear out. I just replaced the one in my 89. I was doing some work on it, reached in to start it, and after it started realized the keys were sitting on the drivers seat Definitely NOT a good thing.
Anyway, 29.00 at the dealer (p/n E5TZ-11582-A). Fixed it in the
parking lot of the parts department.

Not a big deal to fix

Hope this helps

They're only ~$10 at a parts store. If you have tilt steering (or any '92-96), you can pull it by turning the key to RUN and pushing the 3/32" pin in the bottom of the column below the lock cylinder. Then the cylinder pulls straight out and the new one goes straight in (provided it's in RUN and its pin is pushed it).

If you DON'T have tilt, you have to pull the steering wheel to get to the pin. Read here.

But I don't think that's what's keeping yours from working. It's cheap to try and might be the problem, so try it.

The other thing that wears out is the actuator. The cylinder has a small gear on the end that moves the a rod up and down the steering column. This actually moves the switch on the lower top of your column. Mine was worn out and would be hard to turn. I changed this 20 dollar piece and all better

Thanks guys. I think the actuator is shot and is jamming up the cylinder. I managed to force the cylinder to turn back to ACC but it won't power anything. I'll strip it down a see what's going on. Thanks again for the help.
