Ok all you tech guru's - here's what I'm looking for.
First, here's what I want to do. I'm looking for a camera to mount in a KW WB900 dump truck to give added vision to the front blind spots. I'm wanting to mount it so it's looking down from the top of the windshield like where a rearview mirror would be. I've looked at places like Circuit City, the Spy Store and places like that and haven't had much luck.
The camera needs to be able to plug into a cig. lighter so it doesn't eat a ton of batteries or have to be turned on and off throughout the day, has to be fairly durable for extensive off-road travel and needs an adjustable screen so it can be viewed from the drivers seat at a glance. I've looked into race cam's, but they just record - no video display.
I don't want to spend $2,000-$5,000 for it either.
So, is there such a creature out there. I'm not really as worried about the recording aspect as I am the viewing.
You could try looking at an R.V. dealership if you haven't already.
They have camers that mount to the rear of some of the bigger R.V.'s so drivers can see what's behind them. Maybe they might be able to come with something. Good luck.
i dont know what to tell you to look for, but i was thinking that having a camera on front ( i know Rigs get alot of rock chips ) well, the camera may not last long.
as for the power for it, i have a "power inverter" that cost about 60 bucks, you plug it into the lighter port and you can run just about anything off of it.
Yeah, we'd thought about tucking a camera in the grille somewhere, but then if you ever had to wash this thing, you'd know as I do that after the first load there would be no picture. If it's not raining, the wet the roads (that's what they call them anyway) on the const. sites to keep the dust down.
Recording isn't really the goal, just a bonus. The goal is for Steve (the driver) to be able to "see the hidden spots" in front of the truck to prevent future occurances of booting people out of the way with the front bumper because he didn't know they were there. In this size/style truck, there's a good 30' in front that is not visable when in the drivers seat. Plenty of room for cars to sneek in from the blind side (and they do) without the driver seeing. I want something to give him the visability. If we happen to record some idiot in the act of stupidity, there's the bonus. It's amazing how many people that are out there that don't know that you can't stop a big truck on a dime.
Anyway, if I mount a camera/monitor high up on the windshield aiming down, it should give him the much needed view. I assume this because when I ride with him I can see a lot more from the passanger seat. The reason I know this is I sit much higher because the pass. seat isn't an air seat so it doesn't move. Needless to say, I don't ride with him much!!!!
We've already ruled out water proof because that doesn't necessarily mean mud proof. If the lens is full of mud, it defeats the purpose.
Something I saw in a school bus fleet magazine was a system that was made for catching stop arm violators. http://www.safetyvision.com/ The system can have both features recording and monitering, and would be ideal for what you describe. I do not know the cost.
