Another question all you Ford guys ! !
I just got done putting the 360 in the '78 , and I ran across a little something.
On the left front face of the block I saw these casting numbers:
67
352
Do I have a 352 instead of a 360?
Thanks,
Mike
You should hope so. A 352 should have higher compression and run better. But besides that about 90% FE blocks will have the notorius 352 casting on it. Pin height on the 352 is taller wich makes better compression. I think you probably have a 360. were did the engine come from truck or car, I do not think that they made 352's in 67 could be wrong though.
I don't know what the 67 means but the 352 is almost on all FEs made before 1973. Even the 427 had it. It means you have an FE and that is all. On the passenger side of the block a little towards the front you will find a casting number kind of like C7ME-A or something in a similar format. You verified the 3.5" stroke already right?
I am pretty sure that 68 was the first year for the 360 but I don't think the number 67 he saw there represents the year. Mine says 105 and near it there is the number 16.
Last year for the 352 was '66 for cars and '67 for trucks. The 360 was introduced in '68 for trucks only. '68 was also the first year for an optional 390 in trucks. I have heard of some dealers optioning the 390 in the '65 - '67 trucks though.
I work at NAPA and all the books there say 352 is the only V8 engine in trucks from 65-66. In 67 you could get a 352 or 360. in 68 they went to the 360 and 390. So 65-67 are the only years for the 352. Hope this helps clarify some.
I believe you what the books say but the 360 came out in '68. You could get the 361 and 391 in the bigger trucks for '67 though. It was the dealers that put 390's in the earlier trucks, that's why they don't show up in the books.
Wow, a can of worms..
And no, I haven't verified stroke length yet.
The engine came from a '74 F150 4X4, and had what was left of a 360 sticker on the valve cover, BUT..
It has a rebuild tag on the block form a place (Howard Campbell)that either moved or went out of business here in San Antonio.
I guess as long as it turns the input shaft on the tranny I should be happy.
Thanks,
Mike
