tranny fluid out vent

Just bought a 2002 Excursion to tow my 31ft travel travel trailer (5700 dry weight). Should have checked tranny fluid beforehand but I did not. Took it for a test ride and upon returning found fluid on crossmember and a little on the front of my hitch. Drained 4 quarts of extra fluid to attain the right level when hot. I am hoping that being overfull was my only problem and after draining the extra fluid I am hopeful I wont blow more out next time or have other problems. The tranny temp. gauge never indicated a problem and it towed like a dream. Any input besides the obvious oversite on my part , possible damage?

Are you checking the trans fluid level with the trans warmed up, engine idling in park, and on a level surface?

Yes level is now good, up to temp. and in park on level surface Right at top of hash marks. Any idea why someone would overfill it so much?

Sounds like someone may have changed the trans. fluid and checked the "book" to see how mutch it held and went by the book, but did not drain the torque converter.
I think you will be OK.
Good thing you caught it and drained the excess.
This was FIRE hazzard for sure.

Tranny fluid did look O.K. (not burnt for sure) maybe thats what happened (new fluid). If a torque converter holds about 4 quarts I bet you are correct. Thanks. I may just have Ford put it on their flush machine and have them refill it with mercon V. That way I know its right. If someone screwed up that badly on the fluid level there is no telling what fluid they may have used. Absolutely love the truck and cant wait to take it on our first trip. Would be nice not to have to worry about transmission.

A torque converter holds closer to 8 quarts.

Thanks Mark and UrbanXX for your input. I will be taking my trailer out in the near future for another test ride. Im a little nervous about this because I just replaced a 1999 Expedition (4r100,99000 miles) that was blowing fluid out the vent and it wasnt overfilled. Granted I was a lot closer to my max weight with that truck but I wasnt overweight. Talked to alot of people and figure it was a bad torque converter. It blew about 4 quarts of fluid out every time I drove it.(had tow package, tranny cooler, bypass ok etc.etc.). Anyway thanks for your help!

we had kind of the same issue..going up a long grade...near our home on our yearly summer trip..100+ degrees ..we never tow......we would blow out tranny fluid....our tranny works perfectly....and its only on that long steep 10mile uphill...we think its the type of fluid(cheap) our mechanic always put the cheaper stuff...im working when he comes...at first i though it was overfilled and worried about blowing a seal or something...but no obvious damage other than the X being coated with fluid...we bought used with 70,000m now we have 145,000

had the same problem with mine last month going down south from mich. trans was 2 qrts over full. took it to a jiffy lube in NC and had the extra drained out. drove home through virgina and west virgina and did not have a problem. my trailer is about 8500lbs and my truck only has the 3:73s for now.

it seemed when i'd pull over to check the fluid....boy hot hot hot....it would seem to be overfilled....but when we would fill up with gas later and i'd check..it would be fine...maybe just the circumstances.....uphill..70+mph....heavy on the pedal and ac blowing....and the oil quality?....dunno...

my truck was 4 inches past the hash marks on the dipstick when it was stone cold.(someone overfilled it) the level didnt change much once it was hot and idling in park. drained almost 4 quarts to get the level right. now I am crossing my fingers that everything is O. K.
