4R100A transmission...

I am planning to replace my transmission fluid and filter this week sometime. The tranny code on the driver's door is "E", which I believe stands for the 4R100A tranny. (2000 5.4L)

Here is the problem: I have read in several places that this tranmission should have a drain plug. I don't have one. I am planning to drain the fluid out the return cooling line so the plug isn't a big deal, but more of a hassle.

Can someone explain which pans have the drain plug and how Ford decided which tranny got them?

Thanks...

I am converting the fluid to full synthetic (mercon compatible). I won't mention the brand since that seems to cause arguments.

Install an inline filter in the cooling lines also.

Care to post any background on that one? I would prefer not no cut and flare the line without some facts on the benefit. I'm assuming the filter would go on the return line. Is there a part number? Do you feel that the filter in the tranny is inadequate? There is already a magnet sitting in the bottom of the pan so I'm not worried about catching metal shavings. What exactly are we trying to filter out that the internal filter is missing?

I'm open to the suggestion and appreciate the response, but would like some more information.

Your torque convertor will have a drain plug on it. You just have to turn the engine over by hand until it comes to the bottom of the bellhousing. The pan on my 2k EB with the same engine/tranny had a plug right on the bottom of the pan. Look again, it should be there.

I would highly recommend you make it easier on yourself and your tranny. Removing th pan is a good way to see if you have filings and you can change filter too. Yes, find the plug on the converter and drain also. Also, 4000miles ago I had my tranny fluid changed by Ford because I had them check something. Then just a couple months later I changed it again with Red Line. I could easily tell the difference in the smoothness and quicker operation. Worth every penny ($9 qt.)

I did the fluid/filter change today. I was hoping for a drain plug to make removing the pan cleaner. There wasn't one, but it went really well. I removed almost the full capacity of the system by draining the cooling lines with some clear tubing, then the torque converter, then the pan. The fluid looked brand new, but its synthetic now anyway. I added over 14.5 quarts to get back to the full-hot level (capacity is 14.9 quarts). I cleaned the pan and magnet with lint-free wipes. I reused the factory gasket as it was way higher quality than the one supplied with the filter.

There was no plastic factory plug floating around. The tranny has never been worked on or serviced. My last 3 Ford trucks had the plastic plug in the pan. No trophy? What's up with that?

The plastic plug would be the plug installed on the inside of the transmission was built. Once installed, the plug gets knocked into the pan when the dipstick tube is installed. It will float around the pan safely until the first time the pan is removed for service.

As to the drain plug issue, I think I read somewhere else on the boards that only the 4x4's have a drain plug in the pan.

Hope this helps!
