A few months back I posted about a problem I had with my '78 F-100 swb. Out of the blue the transmission decided to take its sweet time upshifting. Dropped the pan, drained the fluid, and changed the filter & modulator. (Fluid wasn't particularly nasty, and not much junk in the pan.)
And now when I start it up & put it in gear...nothing. No gears in either direction. %$#@!
Before I bite the bullet for a tranny rebuild, is there something stupid I'm overlooking? The ATF I used is the basic FoMoCo stuff you get at AutoZone/WalMart etc. (Mercon I think?) The modulator is just a press-in, and the new one is the "black" band.
A) the clean ATF was the last straw for the tranny
OR....
B) I've somehow messed up the modulator installation. I made sure that the pin was in place when I installed the new modulator.
Looking forward to any advice...and to spending quality time under my truck.
How tough is it to drop a C6 from a 4X2? The tranny shops around here act as if finding rebuild parts for a C6 is akin to finding a 4 leaf clover on the sun, and pricing it accordingly ($900-$1200). Since I paid $350 for the truck in the first place, I'm having a real hard time justifying spending that kinda green!
They must have made millions of C6s over the years, surely the parts arent rare. Beware of AAMCO- it stands for "all automatics must come out" as in to be replaced lol

Thanks again y'all!
Had my C6 completely rebuilt last year including new torque converter and the shop hooked it up on their dyno and checked for proper pressures and shifting, all this for $700.00.(Performance Torque Converters in Muscle Shoals, AL.) The transmission was carried to them and picked up when finished. These transmissions are very heavy compared to other automatics. The parts for C6's are common and I'm told are some of the easiest to repair.
If you do establish that the tranny does indeed need rebuilding, I have a suggestion: try rebuilding it yourself. It sounds like a cumbersome task, but I was able to accomplish it at 15 years old with very limited equipment, (ex. sockets, brake cleaner, larger screwdriver and a large piece of plumbing pipe to compress a spring to put a snap ring. These transmissions are not rocket surgery, it would be an interesting learning experience and if there are no hard parts fried (ex. gearsets, or clutch hubs or drums,) then you could probably rebuild and put a shift kit in it for about 150-300$
My biggest advice would be, take your time and look up a site called bad shoe productions, the fellow on that site sells a dvd where he walks you through step by step how to rebuild the c6.

Thekingofcows just gave me my new favorite saying, "not rocket surgery" that is good I've already used it twice today. But he is correct not difficult just intimidating and I do have to give him props for doing it at 15, when I was 15 I was just sitting around acting stupid. I would definatly pull it myself and carry it into a shop though saves $$ on the labor. Be sure to find a shop familliar with the C6.
Its simple, I rebuilt a E4OD with a buddy and I did most the work while he drank, kingofcows is way ahead of me on this so he is absolutely right. Plus its fun.
