Took my 2000 expy in for rear end work. They charged me for 4 qts of gear lube. Im pretty sure it took just under 3 qts and 10-12 oz of additive. They charged me $24 a qt which I know is high but, I needed the work done.
Your owners manual says to use: 75W-140 Synthetic Rear Axle Lubricant 2.9-3.1L (5.5-5.8 pints) (3.06-3.27 quarts)
There is also a footnote that says: Your vehicle’s rear axle is filled with a synthetic rear axle lubricant and is considered lubricated for life. These lubricants are not to be checked or changed unless a leak is suspected, service is required or the axle has been submerged in water. The axle lubricant should be changed any time the axle has been submerged in water. Add 118 ml (4 oz.) of Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A or equivalent meeting Ford specification EST-M2C118–A for complete refill of Traction-Lok axles. Service refill capacities are determined by filling the rear axle 6 mm to 14 mm (1/4 inch to 9/16 inch) below the bottom of the filler hole.

I think it goes for $17-18 at Advance Auto per quart. The additive is $5 for 4 oz I think. Its a question of whether you were capable of doing the work yourself, and/or whether you want to mess with it. If it's done, it's done.
The driver side rear was locking up. I had the rear end opened and pulled the pin to better check to see if I could see any worn or broken gears. I took a break and went inside for lunch only to come back and find that my son, who was helping, had spun the wheels and caused the spider gears to fall out. I could not for the life of me get them back in...hence having it to go to the shop. I have done my own work on the diff before, leaking seals and gasket so the job was not beyond me. Ended up being the friction plates. Just thought I had got taken on the amount of gear oil.
