Well, I'm confused. When I took my truck in for its first oil change (not at a dealer), the service guy told me that there's a problem with the V10's dipstick design that causes it to show that it needs more oil after you put in the recommended amount. They put in 6 qts. I checked the manual, and it says 6 qts for all gas engines. But the FAQ on the superduty forum here says the V10 takes 6.5 qts. What gives? Anybody know the "real" answer?
tankhead, No I haven't changed oil yet. That's one reason I'm watching this thread. The dealer will be doing the first oil change then I'm on my own. I noticed that there is 1.5" between MIN and MAX on the dipstick. That would seem to leave a lot of room for oil amount discrepency. Thoughts?
Not really (discrepancy). When u put in a case of oil, and thats a whole nother thread, it's just too low and doesn't reach the minimum mark on the dipstick. Get 7 quarts It'll save yourself another trip to WallyWorld.
just put in 7 and you wont hurt a thing. like i said above in my earlier post, i put 6.5 to 7 evertime. and i say 6.5 to 7 because i add in extra unused oil left over from the previous change. never get low oil lights, knocks, nothing...good luck
Putting too much oil in the engine will blow seals. Factory specs for V10 is to replace with 6 quarts when changing oil and filter. The dipstick should read full in the middle of the hash marks on the dipstick.
Don't understand why Ford did this, since everyone has always put in enough oil to reach the full mark on the dipstick, but 6 quarts and the half way mark is the ticket on this engine.
The manual says that when checking the oil level, if the oil is between the low and full marks (in the hash mark range), DO NOT ADD OIL in bold in the manual!
Not sure what they are trying to tell us, but hearsay was to not overfill and blow seals.
I've being adding 6.5 qts of Mobil 1 10W30 for years with zero point zero problems. I do my own oil changes with K&N filters. 84,000 miles purring like a kitten.
An Update... I went to the dealer yesterday for my free oil change. I got there at 7:25am and was told it would take 2+ hours. Needless to say I left and went to wally world an picked up a FL-820 and 7 qts. of Motorcraft 5W-20. The first thing I noticed was the difference in filters, not just the gray to white color difference, but the holes and area around the anti-drain back valve. The wally world 820 looks like a Purelator as others have posted. As discussed above, my manual says 6qts. I put the six qts. in and started it up and then let it sit a while. I checked the dipstick and the oil was exactly in the middle betwenn MIN and Max. I'm going to leave it that way for now but do you guys think the other .5qts. would take it up to Max?
Antelope, you get the same exact results I do. The manual says 6 quarts and it also states that if the oil level is between the min/max marks, DO NOT ADD OIL! That tells me that the 1/2 way level is the full mark for this engine.
This is not my opinion, but what I have read in the manual. This definately confuses those that have always understood the full mark to be the full mark and now, the 1/2 way point is the full mark.
I have a hard time believing that if we added the extra 1/2 quart, that it would be a problem, but for some reason, Ford is cautioning us to overfilling.
I wonder if there might be a situation where some oil has a hard time draining down (at least quickly) while checking the dipstick and that is why they are telling us to NOT ADD when checking the oil level????
With my 1999 3.0L Ranger, the owner's manual calls out a oil
capacity of 4.5 quarts with filter. 4.5 quarts puts the oil level
right in the middle of the hash marks on the dipstick. So, I use
the recommended 4.5 quarts.
