I initially did the sanding/cleaning of the contacts which seemed to be the obvious issue. After re-installing with no result, I later took time to look a little closer at the issue. Looking at the mechanism while apart and rocking the switch it appeared the sliding/rocking component was not making contact with the stationary part. Thinking I would not really get anywhere, I went ahead and dismantled the suspect rocker part and compared it to the other ones as a reference. Before noting the bad one had an obviously short leg on it. I initially tried bending the sliding contact with no success.
From the looks of the wear on the pegs, I kind of doubt the previous owner replaced it. I don't know when this issue usually arises, but my truck had 27/28 k on it when I purchased it and I started having problems with my switch shortly after the warranty expired (of course).
Just a thought. Sometimes all it takes is one person to say its the contacts and that becomes the mantra. The nature of the internet, I guess. Though I researched some in various forums on this problem and know it is a known issue I am not a big forum poster. I was just trying to help someone with a solution that worked for me when other solutions seemed to be inadequate. I am curious as I have not run across a post indicating that Ford or some tech has confirmed the contacts are the issue. Is this the case? If not how have people been confirming the the contacts are the issue...or have they just been assuming it is the issue? After all, if you think it is the contacts(a reasonable assumption) and you replace the unit....then I guess It was the contacts.
And of course I could be way off on all of this. We can only go on the experience of what worked/works for us and you may have way more knowledge on this subject. Also, I guess we could be talking about two different problems, but I often note in posts that people are not getting the "click" when they operate the switch. That was a symptom of my problem and with my fix I get the satisfying click during operation now.
In my original post I noted that the one touch down was no longer operational. Any ideas on that? Also, YMMV= Your Mileage May Vary.
On my switch, it clicked. It just wouldn't take the window back up once I took it down. It worked fine for a little over a week after cleaning. It most likely was a contact issue. The parts guy at the stealership I buy parts from said it's a known problem. The parts department wouldn't stock the switches if it weren't a known problem. But you'll probably never see Ford step up to the plate and issue a recall. And I would love to get rid of the one touch down feature. It has annoyed me ever since 1994 when I had to put up with it on my old beater Taurus. It's another feature I wish Ford would let us to disable. In fact, I wouldn't be a bit annoyed if I could get manual roll up windows on an XLT trim level. It would save a little weight and expense in the long run.
