So I got the main part of the truck going, the transmission and now the next thing on the list is my transfer case. The transfer case wont engage in park or neutral. with or without the truck running. but was messing with it while it was out and the shift works fine goes in all gears. but when hooked back up it doesn't. Could the linkage hooked up to it not be in correct. i just put it back the way it was previously. and before it didnt work either (so i didnt break nothing)..
Lots of times, people will engage 4-low without locking the hubs, just to have better gearing for things like pulling a boat up a boat ramp.
The reverse is also true. You can safely operate the truck with the hubs locked, and the TC in 2wd. You just have a little extra driveline drag. This is often done in snowy.icy conditions, so the front axle can be engaged as needed, by simply pulling/pushing a lever.
As festus says, sounds like the linkage is your issue.
thanks guys i guess ill be taking a look at that on my next couple days off next week. is there anyone out there that might have pics of this so i can kinda take a look at it and see what it looks like down there when it works. i know its just a bar that hooks up to the shifter and the tcase.
no body lift on truck. just factory high boy lift. theres nothing binding on it as far as i can tell. i dont have the rubber boot on it right now. just a big hole. i was reading on a couple other posts that some trucks you gotta push down on the shifter part. is this the case on the 80's as well. if so that might be my problem.
well i went to my truck today after work and found out why it wasnt engaging. when i put the tranny in i just threw the linkage on the tcase. well today i noticed that the gear was all the way down telling me it was engaged to i believe 4low. maybe 4hi. so i took the linkage off fixed it and now it works. not sure if that was the problem at first but now it goes all the way down. Now just gotta make sure the front drive shaft is spinning when engaged. if it is i finally got 4 wheel drive working and can mark it off my list.
thanks everyone.
