Brake Question
Yesterday I was working under the truck and noticed a cable system (much like a bicycle brake cable) connecting to the rear brakes. However, the cable running to the passenger side rear brake was missing.
I know nothing about drum brakes, but is this an issue? Is the cable system part of the main braking system or is it part of the emergency/parking brake system? As always, any insight or feedback would be greatly appreciated.
All the best,

I am thinking the cable you're describing goes into the bottom of the brake backing plate and is attached inside the drum area to the emergency brake linkage. You may want to remove the rear drums and look at where the cable enters and see what's going on.
If the emergency brakes haven't been used very often, been submerged in water, etc. the cable inside the the steel sheathing will rust inside and bind up, making them unable to be slide inside. You may be able to free them up by removing the cable from the truck and coiling it into a small pail and covering them with diesel fuel (fuel oil) to soak for a few days.... they may free up - or you'll need to just replace them cables. The operation of the emergency brakes will not affect the operation of the drum brakes......you just won't have any emergency brakes.
Many states/ urban locations that have vehicle inspections will require that you have operating emergency brakes, so I'd recommend you add that to your, "Need to Repair" list.
