ok so i got hte truck runnning fairly well....well enough to drive it but now the exhaust smell is terrible at idle! i also can see a white smoke screen comming from the tail pipe while just sitting there in about a min or 2 the smoke woud fil my 24x24 garage to unbareable smell taht hurts your eyes. WHat gives? im running about 2.5 turns out on my carb A/F mix screws with about 3.5psi fuel pressure before entering the carb. there is no cat on the truck. timing is very close to 12* BTDC at idel
I have not bought a vac gauge to set that but i know I need to.
im also getting a stumble when i try nad step on it i think i need a bigger acc pump. anyone got a number for me to try?
also what about a smaller PV like a 4 or a 2.5. I think i may order a rebuid kit and make sure there is no fuel leaking in to the carb at idel.
I checked the plugs after a 20 mile round rtip and they are tan....maybe a little dark but not bad at all
also hte truck takes off way better now that advance is on a ported vac seting thanks for that help guys
is everything stock? what year is it? because my 1980 info says to set timing at 6 deg BTDC. Plus it really helps to set your mixture by a vacuum gauge. I started out at 1 1/2 turns out, started richening it then, once it peaked I leaned it out until the vac started to drop, then adjusted the rpm to 500 rpm, to set the timing, once that was dead on, is set the idle rpm to 600, and she purrs like a kitten now. Still need to check my plugs soon.
Silly question, but did you put a water heated spacer between the intake and carb? If so, it could be leaking coolant into the intake.
How many miles has this engine been run? A fresh rebuild will burn some oil, until the rings fully seat in.
Just because it's fresh rebuild, doesn't mean it was rebuilt correctly, or that it couldn't have a cracked block or head, or even a head gasket leaking. If the engine was purchased as a long block, with the head already on it, it may not have torqued down correctly.
well i fittled with it all day today. got it to where the engine is liking life. nice and tan plugs adn 19mpg at 70mph on a 67mi road trip.
now I'll have to see how it does around town. I think there is a small very small vac leak somewhere cause once again I have to tap the throttle to get it to idle down compleatly. stupid vac leaks GRRRRRRR!!!!!
all in all its runnign great right now. I hope it stays that way!!! keeping everything crossed.
ps. it hates hates hates EFI pugs reg. motorcraft in and it purred
i also beleive that I do need to give it some time to "break in" and if then I still have a funny exhaust smell well i'll address that then
I should add that I just found out that I have 3.00 gears and the 4 speed non OD so that is the NP435 or something like that right?
i know the tag for the rear is 3.00 on my 9" abd the tranny doesn't have od so I know its a granny 1st only about 6-10mph out of first LOL
I read somewhere that as long as key letters are in the right places, it doesn't matter if you grossly misspell an entire article or paragraph, it can still be read intelligently.
