At least where I live, the highway departments do not use a lot of salt but they use a mixture of sand and salt. The state DOT on the other hand uses straight salt.
Neil - they've gone to the liquid stuff over the past couple years here, at least locally. Probably too many dinged up car complaints from salt trucks, but the stuff is nasty on paint...
ive seen the liquid mix. nasty stuff. in NE they just use gravel. my mom used to get a protective coat underneath my exploder every fall, in preparation for the winter. we havent done it in quite a few years which is why i think the rockers are just now startin to go...
Neil they use straight salt here as well as a deicing liquid for some of th ebridges and this past winter they tried a brine solution which was a mix of molasses and road salt. talk about nasty stuff for the vehicles. makes me glad the local carwash has an undercarriage flush system for the touchless system.
