I should check into that because a few days ago I started it to check and see if anything had changed and it hasn't. So I asked my dad to sit in the drivers side to make sure it does't roll into the stone wall its parked in front of while I looked under the truck in hopes of finding something, I did see smoke come from above the Transfer Case but I wasn't sure if it was from the tranny and the smoke just didn't escape until the Transfer Case or if it was the TC itself. I'll have to take the plug out and check like you suggested. Thanks again for all the help.

Sorry, when I said TC in my last post, I meant the transfer case. My bad. You shouldn't have to mess with the torque converter in what I was suggesting. There is a seal in the front of the transfer case (where it mates to the transmission) that seperates it from the transmission fluid wise. You should have the Borg Warner 1356 transfer case in that truck.

There are two plugs in the rear of the transfer case that take a 3/8" square wrench to remove. One is a fill (closer to the bed) and the other is the drain plug (closer to the ground). Just take a 3/8" ratchet with an extension and break them loose, but be careful because some of them are a pain in the rear. lol. Remove the lower plug and drain the fluid out of the transfer case into a pan or something. It should be clear red ATF (because that's what it takes) and should be around 2 quarts worth (because that's the capacity). Anything else indicates an internal problem in the transfer case (ie. metalic chuncks, silver or black fluid, etc.).

Smoking out of the transfer case isn't a good sign as it is a sealed unit. Mine ended up developing a leak somewhere and was pretty much empty when I finally got around to checking it. I rebuilt it myself (which you don't have to do but it was cheaper for me) and had to buy a bunch of stuff. I ruined the oil pump, range fork, range hub, a couple of bearings and broke the back half of the case. E-bay was my friend. Post your findings back here and we'll help you try to figure out what happened. If i'm correct, a transfer case is cheaper than a transmission. Good luck!

I know that they are prone to failure because the pump will spin because of a weak spot in the case. It causes the range hub to eat through the range fork with no lubrication. I also think that this would cause you to lose reverse first because of the way the teeth are cut in the range gear. It would also cause your grinding, sporatic engagement and your vehicle rolling in park. It might be worth it to take the drain plug in the TC out to look for shavings in the fluid and see if this is the cause of your problem. Had it happen to me because the PO ran it without fluid and I never bothered to check it out until it was too late. Just a thought and I hope it helps. Good luck again!
You were exactly right. I brought it to a mechanic and he found out that the Transfer Case was burnt completely with no fluid in it. So we found one for 350 and he's putting it in for an additional 275. I'm very grateful you said something about the Transfer Case cause I was very close to ordering a transmission from a junkyard that I would have been pissed since it wasn't the problem. Thanks again.

No problem, just trying to help. Had the same thing happen to me so I know the feeling. I thought that I was going to have to replace my E4OD but the darn thing worked too good so I couldn't see it being a problem. Good luck with the truck!
