I was under the F250 today replacing my freshly-balanced rear drive shaft (another story) and when I was finished I decided to check the fluid levels in the rear diff and transfer case. Diff was fine, but...
...when I pulled the fill plug on the t-case some of the fluid started coming out...and coming...and coming. I'm used to seeing maybe a little bit due to temperature expansion or whatever, but I ended up with about a cup of extra fluid before it quit.
What gives? The truck is sitting level and I can't imagine how I would have put so much extra fluid in there last time I serviced the T-case, which was about 10k miles ago.
Should I just drive it and not worry about it or what?
I had a seal bad on my Ramcharger between the trans and the t-case that caused the same thing to happen. When I bought the truck the t-case had so much fluid in it the output shaft seal stared to leak at the rear. You should fix it before it causes more problems.
Was the transmission an equal amount low? Could be a seal seeping some.
Just a thought....
I hadn't thought of that. The trans doesn't look low, but it's tough to tell with less than a cup being displaced - if that's what has happened. There's no external leaks at all, though.
I think I'm just going to keep monitoring this and if it continues to happen over the next couple months I might split the two and have a look.
