My tranny in my 1996 F150 4x4 with a 302 5.0 recently went and im looking for a used one with decent miles and at a decent price. If anyone has one or comes across one I would be very grateful to hear about it.
Im located near the Boston area in Mass. And what im told from the previous owner is it has a 4R70W in it right now but that tranny was from a junkyard and the original tranny was an E4OD but he's not sure.
UPDATE: I made my weekly trip to the dump and in the process I lost Park and Reverse.
The PCMs (Powertrain Control Module) are not compatible from one to the other. I also think the flexplates are different too. So if the PO installed the 4R70W without changing the others, I see why it may have failed.
Check the transmission code listed on the driver side door jamb. I think there should be a decoder in the Tech Guides listed above. Yep, use this: Ford Door Sticker Decoder .: Articles
Yea, it has a U so it did originally have a 4R70W tranny. Thanks for letting me know there was a guide. I have a LMC truck part book and it has the look up for the sticker but all it said for the tr code was "Transmission Code" or something like that.
I was going to rebuild it but after doing some research, I see that most people end up putting more money into their rebuild as opposed to just finding one with decent mileage from a junkyard.
I think that the clutch and clutch plates are toast because it grinds when it downshifts and now most likely needs a new reverse gear. I just don't want to open it and start putting money into it only to find that it needs much more than I can afford.

I have to ask, how did you lose Park? Does the vehicle roll when you put it into Park? If so, you might just have a linkage adjustment problem. Especially with Park and Reverse being right next to each other. Just a thought that might save you some money if it's something so simple.
In park it rolls and reverse just grinds constantly. If I put it directly into Drive, 1st, or 2nd, it's fine. But if I put it into Reverse, it grinds still, then try and put it into Drive, 1st, or 2nd, it grinds non-stop.
I bet the park is a linkage problem but the tranny still needs to be replaced no matter what. It grinds on any downshift as well as in Reverse.
After re-reading the post, you said it was a 4x4. Are you sure that it's not your transfer case going out? I know that they are prone to failure because the pump will spin because of a weak spot in the case. It causes the range hub to eat through the range fork with no lubrication. I also think that this would cause you to lose reverse first because of the way the teeth are cut in the range gear. It would also cause your grinding, sporatic engagement and your vehicle rolling in park. It might be worth it to take the drain plug in the TC out to look for shavings in the fluid and see if this is the cause of your problem. Had it happen to me because the PO ran it without fluid and I never bothered to check it out until it was too late. Just a thought and I hope it helps. Good luck again!
