Hello all.... new COE owner here and looking for a decent set of 20" locking ring rims for my 38 Ford COE. 5 on 8" bolt circle. Need two fronts and 4 rears. Im in Indiana so if you are close, I can drive to pick up or could have shipped. contact me at jbonzii@sbcglobal.net. Thanks!
Jeff and I have started a conversation about wheels over on the Ford Barn, and I suggested he come here. I think we need to know, Jeff, what size rims and tires are on your truck now so we can help you get what you're needing. Back in the '30s the rims were generally more narrow so my guess is that you'll have tires that are in the 6.50 - 7.50 x 20" range rather than the bigger 8.25" tires. These smaller tires would have been used on rims that are 5", using the modern NWRA measurement method, or 4.33" using the old measurement method . The 8.25" were used on 6" rims (modern measurement method). If you can, please scratch around on the concave side rim lips to see if you can find Budd part numbers. That'd help me look them up to tell you exactly what you've got.
I'm gonna p.m. a couple guys over on the 48-56 side that I think might have a line on some wheels, and live half way close. I've got a couple too that might work for Jeff. Stu
Edit -I heard back from one of the guys I messaged. He has used the wheels he had to replace widow makers himself. Stu
New custom made wheels are available, but none of the major wheels companies make new standard production wheels having the 5 lug x 8" pattern. Tire chains like the huge Les Schwab company that blankets the west coast commonly have contracts with custom wheel companies. Les Schwab gets their custom wheels from American Wheel Specialist of Pasco, WA. When I visited AWS a few years ago they took me on a tour and I saw their yard supply of old widow makers and lock ring wheels that are used as donors for new tubeless and lock ring custom wheels. Stu
Les Schwab is where I got my new tires (7.50x20 on the front and 8.50x20 on the rear) and the replacement wheel.
I didn't bother to ask where they got the wheel and assumed it was no big deal for them to order it in. For all I know they have a stack of NOS in Redmond.
More than likely American Wheel Specialist had a supply pre-made up. Schwab trucks make a regular route to AWS so they don't even add shipping charges to wheel purchases as I understand. Pretty good deal. You might look at the wheel and compare it to your other originals. The AWS wheel will no doubt have the center fully welded into the rim, like modern wheels. Old originals on a '47 would have been riveted. Stu
