The problem there is 90 % of the shops will time it by ear, not a lot of them have the meters for these old rigs. Learn me something, how are you going to cause a runaway by adjusting the timing.
You can't. Worst case senario is it will run like crap and smoke much worse. You can even time the injector pump 180 degrees off via incorrectly meshing the drive gear and still all that happens is lots of smoke and horrible power.
I'm not really well versed in timing by meter but considering the MPG results I am netting lately I think I have it pretty close. If you have access to a good diesel shop that does have the correct meter and you feel you can trust them however, then I think it would be worth doing if you are not comfortable timing by ear.

well I have no reputable diesel mechanics near me, I don't think the ford dealer would have this meter but international may? but I don't think they would work on my small rig, I am very open to trying to time this myself

Then go for it. Just make sure you have a good record for where the timing marks are originally. Maybe take a high resolution picture of the marks with your camera before making the first change.

I will try to look more in detail tomorrow near the IP for these marks and will plan for next weekend to try this, hopefully will go well
You will need a fabbed up wrench or a half moon open end wrench for the 2 bottom nuts. I bought an S type wrench and just cut it to fit 14mm or 9/16. You can use a 19mm wrench on the front of the pump you will see where you can put this right above the top nut to help turn the pump to advance it or retard it. These pics should help!
If it was me and the truck is running good I would put a double dose of my favorite fuel system cleaner in it, fill it with fuel and take it out and drive the chit out of it till the tank is empty before I touched anything. A 93 with only 70k miles on it hasn't been run much. It needs brought up to full operating temp and then have the soot blown out of it and let everything seat back in. After that you will know if it has problems and not just be guessing.
can I ask something, I've heard people saying they get 16mpg with there IDI but I have only driven 80 miles and I have went through half a tank? my primary tank is 18 gallons and I have been doing stop/go city driving I'm basically getting 9mpg? does this sound right?
I'm just guessing here but it sounds like you have been doing alot of tinkering around with the truck, letting it idle and such plus all that stop and go so 9 would be possible under those conditionsl. Have you filled it with fuel and checked the mileage or just guessing from the guage? That could make a big difference.

only tinkering I have done with this truck is replacing primary fuel tank, headlight switch, oil change, cdr valve, and others I cant remember, I filled it full with diesel from Hess where I always filled up the 6.0 HFCM never gave me water problems with this gas station, and I also put in about 3x doseage of diesel kleen in the truck tank, Used aswell in the 6.0 and liked it, I cannot find a local supplier of stanadyne but have been very eager to try it, I have not mapped the miles driven but have counted from when I filled the tank I reset the trip meter and have so far driven about 83 miles and the Front tank needle is a little below the halfway mark
